Job description

Summary

The Millington VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic - Millington - TN is recruiting for a Neurology Physician to serve as a full‑time Specialty Care physician. The position is accountable to the Chief of Specialty Care – for assuring the most effective delivery of state‑of‑the‑art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position – you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine
  • Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current – full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: completion of an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification (ACGME or AOA)
  • Or one year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice in the United States
  • Or non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States
  • Residents in ACGME/AOA accredited programs who meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis
  • PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a scope of practice that allows certain restricted duties under supervision
  • In rare circumstances a Facility Director may request a reasonable exception to the residency requirement for physicians whose experience warrants it
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English

Duties
  • Clinical practice – supervising and teaching Neurology fellows, residents, and medical students
  • Provide consultation on neurological disease states for diagnosis and treatment in inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Share attending call responsibilities with other Neurologists, covering nights, weekends and holiday calls as needed
  • Round with team of fellows, residents and medical students regarding inpatient care
  • Lead and manage the Neurology team, which includes fellows, residents, medical students, pharmacists, and mid‑level providers
  • Collaborate with physicians as Section Chief – Neurology
  • Recognize patients appropriate for referral or consultation with collaborating physicians
  • Consultations may occur through personal, telephone or electronic media contact
  • Co‑sign resident and student notes for admission history, physical examination and admission plan, and daily plan/ progress notes
  • Co‑sign discharge notes and discharge summaries electronically; discharge orders may be written with physician concurrence
  • Clinical assessment and evaluation for inpatients and outpatients
  • Health care management of assigned veteran patients with acute and chronic illnesses
  • Ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic studies
  • Ordering consultations and referrals for inpatients and outpatients
  • Patient follow‑up as appropriate
  • Health promotion and disease prevention
  • Patient, family, and staff education and counseling
  • Clinical research (must have separate research approval)
  • Administrative activities – performance improvement, research and non‑clinical tasks as assigned
  • Lead initiation of changes to inpatient care programs based on research findings
  • Stay informed on developments in management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervising physician or designee related to scope of practice

  • Pay: competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
  • Paid Time Off: 50‑55 days of paid time off per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, possible 5 days paid absence for CME)
  • Retirement: traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contributions by VA
  • Licensure: one full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory
  • CME: possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (requires full‑time status and board certification)
  • Malpractice: free liability protection with tail coverage provided
  • Contract: no physician employment contract, no significant restriction on moonlighting
  • Work schedule: Monday‑Friday 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
