Internship Part 135 Sic Pilot information

What is an internship Part 135 SIC pilot?

An Internship Part 135 SIC (Second in Command) Pilot is an entry-level pilot position with an air carrier operating under FAA Part 135 regulations, typically involving on-demand charter flights or air taxi services. As an intern in the SIC role, pilots assist the Captain in flight operations, perform pre-flight checks, and gain valuable hands-on experience in multi-crew environments. These internships are designed to help pilots log flight hours, learn about commercial aviation, and build the skills needed to advance to Captain positions. Interns are usually recent graduates or pilots working toward higher certifications and more advanced roles in aviation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship Part 135 SIC pilot?

To thrive as an Internship Part 135 SIC (Second in Command) Pilot, you need a commercial pilot certificate, strong knowledge of FAA regulations, and solid flight hours, often including multi-engine experience. Familiarity with aircraft systems, GPS navigation, and flight planning software is typically required, along with any relevant endorsements or training such as instrument rating. Excellent communication, teamwork, and situational awareness are crucial soft skills for supporting the PIC and ensuring safe operations. These competencies are vital to uphold safety standards, ensure regulatory compliance, and contribute effectively to flight crew performance.

What are the common challenges faced by an internship Part 135 SIC pilot and how can I prepare for them?

As an Internship Part 135 SIC (Second-in-Command) Pilot, you may face challenges such as adapting to a fast-paced environment, managing irregular schedules, and quickly learning company-specific procedures and operational protocols. You'll often fly with different captains and crews, requiring strong communication and teamwork skills. To prepare, familiarize yourself with Part 135 regulations, practice adaptability, and seek opportunities to observe or participate in real flight operations. Emphasizing attention to detail, professionalism, and flexibility will help you succeed in this dynamic role.
