What is the difference between Internship Optical Lens Manufacturing vs Optical Lens Manufacturing Technician?

AspectInternship Optical Lens ManufacturingOptical Lens Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsTypically students or entry-level with basic technical knowledgeRelevant certifications or technical training in optical manufacturing
Work EnvironmentTraining setting, supervised, educational focusProduction floor, hands-on manufacturing environment
Job ResponsibilitiesAssisting with manufacturing processes, learning proceduresOperating equipment, quality control, assembling lenses

In summary, an Internship Optical Lens Manufacturing is a training role focused on learning and assisting, while an Optical Lens Manufacturing Technician is a skilled worker responsible for actual production tasks in the optical lens industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern in optical lens manufacturing, and why are they important?

To excel as an intern in optical lens manufacturing, you need a solid understanding of basic optics, attention to detail, and a background in engineering, physics, or a related technical field. Familiarity with manufacturing equipment, lens measurement tools, and quality control systems such as ISO standards is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication will help you stand out in this collaborative and precision-driven environment. These competencies are essential to ensure the production of high-quality lenses that meet stringent industry specifications.

What does an internship in optical lens manufacturing involve?

An internship in optical lens manufacturing typically involves gaining hands-on experience in the production of optical lenses used in glasses, cameras, microscopes, and other devices. Interns may assist in operating manufacturing equipment, inspecting lenses for quality, learning about different materials and coatings, and understanding the precision required in this industry. They often work alongside experienced technicians and engineers to develop practical skills and industry knowledge. This role provides valuable exposure to both the technical and quality control aspects of optical lens production.

What types of hands-on experience can I expect during an Internship in Optical Lens Manufacturing?

As an intern in optical lens manufacturing, you can expect to gain direct experience with processes such as lens cutting, polishing, coating, and quality inspection. You'll often work alongside skilled technicians, assisting with machine operation, conducting tests on lens materials, and learning about precision measurement tools. Interns typically rotate through different stages of production, giving you broad exposure to the workflow and quality control standards. This hands-on involvement is designed to help you understand both the technical and teamwork aspects of lens production in a real-world manufacturing environment.

Job description

At Atom Computing, we build quantum computers using arrays of optically trapped neutral atoms that will empower customers to achieve unprecedented computational breakthroughs. Join a world-class team of scientists, engineers, and business professionals to advance the state-of-the-art in quantum computing.ย
ย
Atom Computing is seeking an Optical Engineer specializing in Lens Design to create custom, high-performance optical systems from the ground up. In this role, you will own the complete optical design lifecycle-from initial concept and ray-tracing to tolerancing, finalizing optical prescriptions, and working directly with fabrication vendors to bring custom lenses for our quantum computer to life.ย ย
Job Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and test lens assemblies and systems for fiber collimation, laser delivery, imaging systems.ย
  • Research and develop novel lens and mirror systems for laser delivery and imaging systems.ย
  • Perform deep analysis on aberration correction, athermalization, and chromatic performance to balance competing system requirements.
  • Evaluate suitability of design solutions by performing detailed tolerance and stray light analysis
  • Develop alignment procedures for optical designs.
  • Generate rigorous optical fabrication drawings and specifications (e.g., ISO 10110 standards) for custom lens components and assemblies.
  • Collaborate directly with custom optics foundries and coating vendors to ensure manufacturability (DFM) and oversee the procurement of custom optical elements.
Experience & Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Sciences or Optical Engineering, advanced degree a plus
  • 5-8+ years optical design experience
  • 2+ years of hands-on optics assembly experience in a laboratory environment
Qualifications
  • Experience with Fourier Optics, flat field relay optical systems, and telecentric imaging
  • Experience in the design of high-numerical-aperture imaging systemsExperience with Zemax, FRED, or equivalent ray-tracing software
  • Expertise in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) for precision optics
  • Fluency in optical drawing standards (ISO 10110)
  • Experience with lens tolerancing in ray-tracing software
  • Experience with STOP analysis
  • Experience with stray light analysis
  • Experience with Onshape, Solidworks, or equivalent 3D CAD design softwareย
  • High attention-to-detail and accuracy
  • Creative, critical thinking with ability to strategize and solve problems in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to work effectively in an open, collaborative environment
  • Excellent communication, listening and people skills
