What is ABO certification?

ABO certification refers to the credential awarded by the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). It is a voluntary process that demonstrates an orthodontist’s commitment to excellence and lifelong learning in their field. To thrive with an ABO Certification, you need a solid understanding of optical theory, lens technology, and eyewear fitting, usually supported by formal opticianry education and passing the ABO exam. Familiarity with optical dispensing tools, lensometers, and practice management software is typically required. Excellent customer service, attention to detail, and effective communication distinguish top-performing opticians. These skills ensure accurate vision correction, customer satisfaction, and compliance with industry standards.

One common challenge for those pursuing ABO certification is mastering the breadth of clinical knowledge and practical skills required for the exams. Many candidates find balancing study time with professional and personal responsibilities difficult. To overcome these challenges, it’s helpful to create a structured study plan, utilize official ABO resources and practice exams, and join study groups or workshops for peer support and clarification of complex topics. Consistent, focused preparation and seeking mentorship from certified professionals can greatly improve exam readiness and confidence.

What does it mean to be ABO certified?

Job description

Two ABO-Certified Optician openings. Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. Clarksburg, West Virginia. Monday through Friday. Five-year federal contract.

In every VA Eye Clinic, there is a moment that matters: a veteran sits down to be fitted for new eyeglasses, prescription written by their VA optometrist or ophthalmologist. The technical work is precise. The human work is just as important. The Optician dispensing those eyeglasses is part of how the VA delivers on its promise to those who served.

This role is for ABO-certified Opticians ready to leave optical retail churn behind for stable, mission-grounded work serving veterans across north-central West Virginia, the Allegheny Mountains, and the surrounding Appalachian region.

What You'll Do

Fit and dispense prescription eyeglasses for veteran patients based on prescriptions written by VA optometrists and ophthalmologists. Verify each prescription against ANSI Z80 standards before dispensing.

Help veterans select frames appropriate to their prescription, face shape, lifestyle, and clinical needs. Educate on lens types, coatings, and proper care.

Perform fit adjustments and minor repairs so each veteran walks out with eyeglasses that fit properly the first time. Handle walk-in adjustments as part of daily workflow.

Conduct final quality inspection of every completed pair against prescription specifications before release. Document the QA check in VA systems.

Communicate directly with the VA Eye Clinic Chief and clinical providers when prescription clarifications or veteran-specific accommodations are needed.

Maintain optical shop inventory and participate in monthly performance reporting that feeds the VA's quality assurance process.

What You Bring

Required:

  • U.S. citizenship (federal contract requirement)
  • American Board of Opticianry (ABO) certification current and in good standing
  • Working knowledge of ANSI Z80 standards for ophthalmic optics
  • Ability to pass a federal background investigation (NACI level)
  • Professional patient-facing demeanor in a federal clinical setting
  • Based in or able to commute reliably to Clarksburg, West Virginia

Strongly preferred:

  • Prior experience in a federal healthcare setting (VA, military health system, or federal contractor)
  • Experience with VA-approved optical lab processes and prescription verification workflows
  • State Optician licensure from any state (West Virginia does not require a separate state license)
  • Active or recent federal security clearance
  • Experience with older patient populations, veterans, or rural / Appalachian communities
  • Military service or military-spouse relocated-workforce background

Why This Role Matters

The Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center serves veterans across north-central West Virginia and the surrounding Allegheny region a service area that includes rural counties where access to specialty care is limited and where federal healthcare infrastructure is the primary option for veteran patients. The Eye Clinic sees veterans who have served in every conflict from WWII through OEF/OIF. This is not transactional optical retail. It is community-grounded clinical service in a region where the VA is the difference between veterans receiving care and going without.
