What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OpenAI Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OpenAI Intern, you typically need a strong background in computer science, mathematics, or a related field, along with proficiency in programming languages like Python. Experience with machine learning frameworks (such as PyTorch or TensorFlow) and familiarity with AI research methods or relevant technical projects are important. Strong problem-solving abilities, curiosity, collaboration, and clear communication skills help interns contribute effectively and learn quickly. These skills and qualities are essential for driving innovation and making meaningful contributions in a fast-paced, research-focused environment.

What types of projects can interns at OpenAI expect to work on, and how are these projects typically structured?

Interns at OpenAI are often assigned to real, high-impact projects that align with their skills and interests, such as research initiatives, developing new machine learning models, or contributing to open-source tools. These projects are typically structured with clear goals and regular mentorship from experienced researchers or engineers. Interns are encouraged to collaborate closely with full-time staff, participate in team meetings, and present their findings, which provides valuable professional development and insight into the cutting-edge work happening at OpenAI.

Does OpenAI hire interns?

Yes, OpenAI offers internship programs for students and early-career professionals interested in AI research, engineering, and policy. Internships typically last several months and require applicants to have relevant technical skills, such as programming in Python, and a strong interest in artificial intelligence. Applications are usually submitted through OpenAI's careers page during specific open periods.

What is an OpenAI internship?

An OpenAI internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience working on cutting-edge artificial intelligence research and development projects. Interns at OpenAI collaborate with leading researchers and engineers, contribute to real-world projects, and learn about AI safety, machine learning, and large-scale model deployment. The program typically lasts for a few months and offers mentorship, networking opportunities, and a chance to make meaningful contributions to the field of AI.

Which 3 jobs will survive AI?

Jobs that require complex human interaction, creativity, and critical thinking, such as healthcare professionals, educators, and skilled tradespeople, are more likely to survive AI automation. These roles often involve emotional intelligence, nuanced decision-making, and hands-on skills that AI cannot easily replicate. Continuous learning and adaptability are essential for job security in an AI-driven workplace.

How hard is it to get an OpenAI internship?

Securing an OpenAI internship is competitive, often requiring strong technical skills in machine learning, programming (Python), and a solid academic background in relevant fields. Applicants typically go through a rigorous application process including coding assessments, technical interviews, and demonstrating relevant project experience.

How much do OpenAI interns make?

OpenAI interns typically earn between $20 and $40 per hour, depending on the role, location, and level of experience. Internships often last several months and may include additional benefits such as stipends or housing support, with roles requiring skills in machine learning, programming, or research. Compensation can vary based on the specific internship program and geographic location.

LegalZoom is on a mission to help people navigate the legal system with confidence and clarity. As a leader in online legal services for over 25 years, we combine technology, attorney-led solutions, and expertise to protect the aspirations, lives, and legacies of millions of customers. If you're ready to contribute to a collaborative, diverse, and distributed group of creative thinkers and problem-solvers, we can't wait to meet you.
Human-in-the-Loop
At LegalZoom, we operate with a human-in-the-loop model, where AI enhances-rather than replaces-human judgment. We believe the strongest outcomes for our customers come from thoughtfully integrating human expertise with AI capabilities to improve accuracy, safety, and decision-making.

To align with our AI-integrated operating model, our interview process will assess AI fluency, curiosity, and measurable/impactful workflow integration.

About the Role
LegalZoom is seeking AI Enablement Engineer Interns to spend the summer helping our team leverage AI to transform how we work. You'll partner with teams across Engineering, Product, Operations, Marketing, Finance, and Customer Care to identify high-leverage opportunities, prototype AI-powered workflows, and ship solutions that meaningfully change how LegalZoom serves its customers and runs its business.
In addition to AI-focused work, you'll also contribute to other technology projects across the company as needs arise-giving you broad exposure to a modern engineering org and the chance to work on real production systems alongside experienced engineers.
ย
This is a hands-on, high-impact internship for a builder who is curious about applied AI and excited to ship.

What You'll Do
  • Design and implement AI-powered workflows using LLM APIs, agent frameworks, and automation platforms - preferably Claude Code
  • Build and evaluate prompts, copilots, and lightweight internal tools that boost team productivityย
  • With the guidance of a senior engineering leader, partner with business and engineering teams to identify inefficiencies and prototype AI-driven solutions
  • Contribute to other technology projects across the engineering organization as priorities evolve
  • Develop scripts, integrations, and small services to support automation and data flow between systems
  • Define success metrics, measure impact, and iterate on solutions using data-driven insights
  • Document workflows and share what you learn so others can build on your work
  • Build solutions that are responsible, reliable, and cost-aware
What We're Looking For
Basic Qualificationsย
  • Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field
  • Proficient in Python (preferred) and comfortable with at least one of TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Solid grasp of data structures, algorithms, and core software engineering principles
  • Hands-on experience working with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar) and prompt engineering
  • Practical familiarity with at least one AI/agent framework (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex, the Anthropic or OpenAI SDKs, Claude Agent SDK, or comparable)
  • Comfortable consuming and building REST APIs and working with JSON
  • Experience with Git/GitHub, the command line, and a modern code editor
  • Familiarity with SQL and basic data manipulation (pandas or equivalent)
  • Strong problem-solving instincts, written communication, and a bias toward shipping
Bonus If
  • Exposure to evaluation frameworks for LLM outputs (e.g., evals, ragas, custom test harnesses)
  • Comfort with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and basic CI/CD
  • Experience with automation tools such as Zapier, Make, or n8n
  • A portfolio of personal AI projects, hackathon work, or open-source contributions
  • Interest in legal tech, business operations, or applied AI in regulated industries
What You'll Gain
  • Real-world experience building applied AI solutions in a production business environment
  • Cross-functional exposure to how a modern legal/tech company actually operates
  • Mentorship from experienced leaders in AI, Product, and Engineering
  • The opportunity to ship work that real LegalZoom teams and customers will use
This internship does not include a guarantee or promise of future employment or a full-time offer.
