What is an ODOT internship?

An ODOT internship is a temporary, structured work experience offered by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to students or recent graduates interested in transportation, engineering, planning, or related fields. Interns work alongside professionals on real-world projects, gaining hands-on experience in areas like civil engineering, project management, and public policy. These internships provide valuable exposure to how a state transportation agency operates and can help build skills and connections for future careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ODOT Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ODOT (Oregon Department of Transportation) Intern, you typically need a background in civil engineering, transportation, or a related field, often supported by current enrollment in a relevant academic program. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software, GIS systems, and Microsoft Office Suite is commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help interns collaborate effectively and adapt quickly in a professional environment. These competencies are important to contribute meaningfully to transportation projects, learn from real-world experiences, and support agency goals.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during an ODOT internship?

As an ODOT (Ohio Department of Transportation) intern, you may participate in a variety of hands-on projects depending on your area of study, such as assisting with roadway design, supporting maintenance operations, or contributing to planning and research initiatives. Interns often collaborate with seasoned engineers, planners, or administrative staff, gaining exposure to both fieldwork and office-based tasks. You’ll likely attend project meetings, help collect and analyze data, and contribute to reports or presentations. This experience provides valuable insights into the public sector transportation industry and can help you build skills for future career advancement.
