The Opportunity:
Internships at Idaho National Laboratory
Idaho National Laboratory (INL) hosts over 300 undergraduate and graduate students each year to support INL's mission. Opportunities for interns at INL range from nuclear engineering to cybersecurity and include non-scientific positions in various operations and business disciplines.

The Deliverables:
Interns will spend the first week of their assignment working with their mentor to outline their work scope and to secure resources for a successful internship. For the next several weeks, the mentor will provide considerable program assistance and guidance to the intern. In addition to regular activities, interns are invited to attend weekly seminars, tours and community events designed with career development in mind. Completion of a final project is highly recommended and can be completed through a variety of mediums - a traditional poster, electronic presentation or video.
The Process:
Through this single application, you are considered for all internship projects related to INL Business, Operations and Administrative functions. Simply complete the application questions which will help us identify what knowledge and experience you already have that may be related to the preferred qualifications for each individual internship project. It is common for applicants to receive consideration for multiple projects at varying times throughout the process. Mentors will make direct contact with applicants who meet their project qualifications to share the specific details of the project. On average, INL plans for approximately 300 internships each year. Most internships provide flexibility with start and end dates to account for varying university term schedules. We encourage early applications to increase the number of opportunities available to you.
The Projects:
Internship projects will focus on positions that are essential for the day to day business operations of INL. Some projects interns have participated in recently include:
--Assisting with the execution of the annual OMB Circular A-123 evaluation of internal controls (government version of Sarbanes-Oxley). Under the direction of the A-123 project lead and manager, the internship will consist of working with managers and staff responsible for business processes and internal control activities to (1) evaluate risks in the processes, (2) evaluate the internal controls in place to mitigate the risks, and (3) test the functionality of key controls to ensure they are operating as intended to prevent or detect occurrence of the risks. This project typically recruits interns for both spring (Jan-April) and summer internships. (Accounting, Finance, and Business majors)
--Working in our Information Management (IM) team as part of our IM Communications & Reporting team to provide communications support for internal campaigns, writing, editing and employee communications.
--The INL Research Library is seeking inters to research, collect, and organize technical information relative to reactors built and tested at the Idaho National Laboratory since its inception in 1949. This information supported GAIN (Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear) participants as they worked to develop innovative nuclear energy technologies for commercial readiness.
--The student developed skills in SharePoint site creation including document libraries, lists, HTML, CSS and some JavaScript.
--Conducted data analysis of system events to provide resiliency metrics, predictive analytics, and health assessment of cyber security systems at the Idaho National Laboratory. This position included opportunities to conduct and analyze cyber security investigations and incident response processes. The final capstone deliverable of the position was an executive level dashboard of cyber significant activities that will be available in real time to key stakeholders of Cyber Security at the Idaho National Laboratory.
--The overall goal of the internship will be participating in a learning partnership with the INL business systems and planning and decision support department. The student will develop advanced skills in Microsoft Power BI by participating in data analytics and metrics generation projects. The student will also be shadowing and performing system administration functions for Business Applications. There will also be opportunities to improve business knowledge by participating in INL business systems.
--The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a university junior or senior majoring in Accounting, Finance, or Project Management to work with the Planning & Financial Controls Lead in support of the Environmental, Safety, Health & Quality (ESH&Q) organization.
~Learn and use the Laboratory project management tools P6 and the cost reporting systems (Discoverer) (BDSIS)
~Assist with the FY-18 planning cycle
~Accumulate, evaluate and document historical schedule data for future development of schedules
~Learn the applicable INL procedures in order to perform self-audit
~Assist in the preparation of financial monthly performance reports, cost analysis and reporting, cost transfers and journals
~As time allows, learn other office procedures and functions
~Position requires excellent computer skills. Ability to operate various computer software and learn new computer software in a timely manner. SharePoint is a plus.
--The INL is seeking an intern to assist in our Prime Contracts department. Responsibilities will include reviewing the prime contract and create a matrix of common subjects.
--The INL is seeking an undergraduate student studying mechanical or civil engineering or a closely related field. Completion of classes in concrete and steel design, finite element modeling, or machine design is desired. The student will develop structural engineering methods, application of designs in the field.
--Provide support to Benefits Accounting in making benefit payments, account reconciliations, and other accounting support. Provide administrative support to the INL retirement and investment plans. Provide support to Payroll and Accounts Payable functions.
--The Training Developer Intern will provide support to INL's Site Wide Training Department. The intern will aid in developing and editing exams, developing and editing curriculum and updating site-wide procedures and policies. Strong writing, editing and Microsoft Word skills and experience are necessary for this position.
--The Stakeholder and Media Affairs intern will provide communications support for media relations, including writing, editing, social media posting and monitoring, website updates and employee communications. Strong writing, editing and organizational skills and experience are necessary for this position. Must have experience dealing with the public in a professional manner.

~Supporting higher level program managers by contributing to the development of comprehensive project plan to establish the REDI Science and Technology ~Advocacy Working Group, including long and short range goals and milestones.
~Conducting regular meetings with customers/clients to ensure all requirements are met, changes in scope or workload are discussed, impacts are identified, and issues get resolved.
~Providing briefings on project status, successes, and issues.
~Monitoring project to maintain guidelines and schedules.
--Internal Audit with projects related to the following; Cost Allowability Audits, Developing automated audit processes in AC, Travel Audit, Purchase Card Audits, Contract Auditing
Required Qualifications:
All Internship Candidates Must:
  • Have the ability to pass a background check
  • Possess a minimum overall 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Complete this application, which is used to place students based on their academic interests, coursework, knowledge and communication skills
  • Enrolled full time student status at an accredited college or university (undergraduate, graduate, PhD).
