Job description

For more than 100 years, the International Institute of New England (IINE) has created opportunities for refugees and immigrants to succeed through resettlement, education, employment support, and pathways to citizenship. With locations in Boston and Lowell, Massachusetts and Manchester, New Hampshire, IINE welcomes and serves thousands of individuals and families annually, including people displaced by political instability, violence, and climate crises; survivors of human trafficking; and unaccompanied children joining family members in New England. As one of the oldest and largest organizations in the region, IINE plays a leading role in shaping public understanding and support of our newest neighbors.

IINE offers internships to students, graduate students, and recent graduates with demonstrated interest or experience in supporting refugee, and immigrant populations. Each internship includes an educational component, through which interns contextualize their experience and reflect on their service.

All internships are unpaid and correspond roughly with the US semester system:

  • Fall Internship: Mid September through Mid December 2026

First consideration is given to applicants that can commit at least 16 hours per week over the course of the semester outlined above. Applicants are encouraged to apply regardless of whether their schedule fits the semester system; IINE makes exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Slots fill quickly and candidates are encouraged to apply earlier than the requested date above.

Please note that this internship will be a hybrid format, meaning that some in-person hours at our Boston, MA office are required.

Overview

The Financial Data Analyst Intern will work closely with the Finance team to support data-driven decision-making across budgeting, grant management, and financial reporting activities. This role is ideal for candidates who enjoy working with large datasets, have strong Excel skills, and are eager to explore how artificial intelligence can improve financial analysis, reporting, and dashboard development.

The intern will help develop user-friendly tools and dashboards that enable finance and program teams to better understand funding sources, spending patterns, cost allocation methodologies, and organizational performance. This position provides hands-on exposure to nonprofit finance, data analytics, business intelligence, and emerging AI applications in financial management.

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer or Budget Director

Location: Boston, MA (hybrid format), remote option available

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing and maintaining financial dashboards to support budgeting, forecasting, grant management, and financial reporting.
  • Explore and test AI-powered approaches for automating financial analysis, dashboard creation, and reporting workflows.
  • Develop easy-to-use tools and templates that help finance and program staff analyze funding streams, grant expenditures, and cost allocations.
  • Assist with data validation, reconciliation, and quality assurance of financial datasets.
  • Create visualizations and reports that communicate key financial insights to finance and non-finance audiences.
  • Document processes, assumptions, and data definitions to promote consistency and usability.
  • Participate in special projects related to financial planning, budgeting, and business intelligence initiatives.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Information Systems, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, lookup functions, and data visualization
  • Interest in the application of artificial intelligence and automation in finance and business operations.
  • Familiarity with Power BI, Excel Copilot, or other business intelligence tools is preferred but not required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize and interpret complex datasets.
