What are internship opportunities at music magazines?

Internship opportunities at music magazines allow students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in music journalism, editorial work, social media, or marketing within the music industry. Interns may assist with writing articles, conducting interviews, researching trends, fact-checking, or supporting editorial staff with daily tasks. These internships are valuable for building a professional network and developing skills relevant to a career in media or music. Most positions are part-time and may be unpaid or offer a stipend, depending on the magazine. Applicants typically need strong writing skills, a passion for music, and an interest in publishing.

What are some common responsibilities for interns at music magazines, and how do they contribute to the publication process?

Interns at music magazines typically assist with research, fact-checking, and drafting content such as artist interviews, album reviews, and event coverage. They often help with managing social media accounts, updating calendars, and supporting editorial staff with administrative tasks. Being proactive and detail-oriented is essential, as interns may also have opportunities to pitch story ideas or attend industry events. This hands-on experience allows interns to learn about the fast-paced editorial workflow, develop their writing voice, and build professional networks within the music journalism industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern at a music magazine, and why are they important?

To thrive as an intern at a music magazine, you generally need strong writing, research, and communication skills, often supported by coursework or experience in journalism, media, or English. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), social media platforms, and basic photo or audio editing tools is typically expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in fast-paced environments are standout soft skills. These qualifications are crucial for producing engaging content, supporting editorial processes, and contributing effectively to the publication’s mission.

Why will you love living in New Orleans?

New Orleans is a world-famous food town filled with life, music (especially jazz), color, and energy. Best known for Mardi Gras and the French Quarter, the area is more than parades and parties. There's a sense of neighborhood, community, and people caring for each other. Surrounded by water and shaded by storied oak trees, there are 100 miles of bike paths through the city and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. The city’s passion for pro and college sports might rival any city in America, and the region is home to the Saints and the Pelicans, along with multiple universities.
