WORK ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

Join Waukesha County's experienced and energized communications team for a hands-on summer internship where creativity meets community impact. We're looking for a collaborative, curious, and motivated Communications Intern who is ready to jump in, learn quickly, and help support meaningful public-facing work across digital, print, social media, and web platforms. This 24-hours-per-week opportunity is ideal for someone with a growth mindset who wants to build real-world communications and design experience while contributing to projects that help inform and connect our community-with the potential for the role to continue in some capacity into the fall, depending on department needs and overall fit.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in developing content for marketing and advertising promotional activities according to communications plan (e.g., social media, videos, collateral, email marketing, newsletter content and graphics, event calendars, internal communications, and web)
  • Support the Public Communication team in daily administrative tasks:
  • Update Waukesha County Health and Human Services events to website
  • Create and schedule content to social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, NextDoor, YouTube)
  • Assist in organizing photo and video content for the department
  • Post internal events to the internal HHS Events Outlook calendar
  • Update WaukeshaCounty.gov/HHS pages
  • Review and provide recommendations for improvement to current communications plan
  • Adhere to brand guidelines and complete projects on deadlines
  • Use graphic design software and work with a variety of media
  • Review new marketing concepts and create mockups using Canva or computer software programs such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator
  • Provide feedback on design concepts created by others
  • Create layouts for advertisements, brochures, newsletters, and other printed materials
  • Create visual designs that communicate messages effectively using a variety of methods, such as color, typography, imagery, and layout
  • Measure and report the results of communications initiatives
  • Work with cross-functional teams as part of our communications team to support various Departmental initiatives

    Essential Knowledge and Abilities

    • Basic knowledge of layouts, typography, line composition, color, and other graphic design fundamentals
    • Experience with Canva, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator Strong creative and analytical skills
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the staff and the public.
    • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to speak and write effectively.
    • Ability to keep records and make reports.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school graduation or GED equivalent.
    • Must possess a valid Driver's License
    • Education and experience in graphic and visual design
    • Pursuing a degree in marketing, communications, graphic design or related field.
    • Applied understanding of basic marketing principles
    • Proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
    • Familiarity with major social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn etc.)
    • Creative problem-solving skills
    • Self-starter with ability to work independently
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    Training and Experience

    • Previous experience in graphic design, marketing and public communication is desirable.
