Bio-Techne is seeking a highly motivated and creative Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead and architect the mechanical design of analytical instruments.
This position will report to the Mechanical Engineering Hardware Manager while working with a group of curious, innovative, and supportive engineers and scientists. This is a unique opportunity, where this individual will be expected to deliver designs which are optimized to achieve best in class analytical performance, are simple to use, and are both reliable and manufacturable. The scope of contributions will span from concept prototyping of new products, supporting production of existing products, and assembly and test equipment

Performance Objectives and Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop analytical instruments and accessories.
  • Deliver best in class products by closely collaborating with cross functional teams of scientists and engineers.
  • Iterate quickly on proof-of-concept prototypes, deliver commercial design solutions, and engage with vendors.
  • Apply engineering knowledge to ensure feasibility, reliability, and manufacturability of proposed designs
  • Meet product requirements and ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and regulations.
  • Create engineering documentation, 3D models, 2D drawings, BOMs, and protocols/reports.
  • Contribute to design reviews and system level problem-solving efforts.
  • Ensure successful transition to manufacturing by supporting development of manufacturing equipment and processes.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment.
  • Provide and receive constructive feedback with good intent.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 10+ years of experience (or Master's degree with 8+ years of relevant experience).
  • Demonstrated experience in mechanism and product design, including the assembly and testing of early R&D prototypes through commercial products
  • Must have experience using system-level thinking to successfully design new products and strong technical skills to efficiently solve complicated problems
  • Experience with designing both complex durable hardware and consumables
  • Routinely and successfully performed and managed tolerance stack analyses of complex systems, effectively allocating tolerances to components and sub-assemblies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of component manufacturing processes (including rapid prototyping, machining, injection molding, metal injection molding, extrusion, sheet metal, etc.).
  • Possess deep knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals (e.g. statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fatigue, FEA, GD&T).
  • Expert using SolidWorks and PDM, including the ability to create models, assemblies, and detailed drawings, following best design practices and ASME standards.
  • Experience optimizing design for manufacturability and actively involved in transfer to manufacturing; demonstrated good understanding of various manufacturing technologies to achieve cost-effective designs and improvements for existing products
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

Preferred:
  • Experience in the life sciences instrumentation industry.
  • Experience in capillary and/or microfluidic based design.
  • Experience with opto-mechanical instrument with optics/detection and fluidics.
  • Experience with automation, manufacturing, and inspection equipment.

Other:
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 15% domestically and internationally.
