Internship Mining Environmental information

What is an internship mining environmental?

An Internship Mining Environmental job involves assisting in environmental management and compliance within the mining industry. Interns may help conduct environmental impact assessments, monitor water and air quality, and ensure that mining operations follow sustainability regulations. They may also support reclamation projects designed to restore land after mining activities. This role provides hands-on experience in environmental science, geology, and regulatory frameworks. It is ideal for students or graduates looking to build a career in environmental management within the mining sector.

What types of projects and tasks does an internship mining environmental typically involve?

Mining Environmental interns are often involved in tasks such as conducting field sampling, assisting with environmental impact assessments, preparing compliance reports, and analyzing data related to water, soil, and air quality. Interns may collaborate with environmental engineers, geologists, and regulatory specialists, gaining hands-on experience in both fieldwork and office settings. These responsibilities provide valuable exposure to environmental regulations, sustainability initiatives, and the operational aspects of mining projects. The experience gained helps build a strong foundation for future roles in environmental management within the mining industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an internship mining environmental?

To thrive as an Internship Mining Environmental, you typically need a background in environmental science, geology, or a related field, along with strong analytical and research skills. Familiarity with environmental monitoring equipment, GIS mapping software, and regulatory compliance protocols is commonly required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work well in a team environment are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for carrying out accurate assessments, ensuring regulatory adherence, and supporting sustainable mining practices.

Job description

Matrix designs, manufactures, and sells innovative technological products that help keep people safe. Originally focused on the underground coal mining industry, Matrix has expanded into new industrial markets in the United States and globally.

We are currently seeking a Senior Electronic Hardware Engineer to design and develop hardware components and systems. You will work closely with other engineers and cross-functional teams to ensure the successful execution of hardware projects. This role is ideal for a proactive and detail-oriented individual with a strong foundation in electronics and a passion for hardware development. This position works in a team environment at our home office in Newburgh, IN. This is not a remote position.

This position reports to the Manager of Hardware Systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to product design requirement definition by translating customer, regulatory, and internal stakeholder needs into clear, testable engineering requirements and acceptance criteria; work from occasional broad objectives and independently drive requirements clarity across stakeholders
  • Own development of hardware specifications and interfaces for assigned subsystems, including architecture decisions, design trade-offs, risk identification, and alignment with system-level requirements; provide technical consultation to resolve unusual and significant problems
  • Plan and execute proof-of-concept builds and feasibility investigations using innovative techniques to retire technical risk early; define approach, success criteria, schedule, and next-step recommendations
  • Design and own complex schematics and PCB layout using Altium Designer, including design partitioning and critical signal/power integrity considerations; provide guidance, coordination, and review/approval of layouts created by others as needed
  • Define and execute verification plans; prototype, debug, and validate circuits to ensure compliance with specifications, safety requirements, and applicable standards, making timely technical decisions and owning outcomes
  • Direct cross-functional design reviews by setting review objectives, ensuring stakeholder participation, driving closure of action items, and maintaining design quality, manufacturability, and serviceability
  • Architect product verification testers and procedures, balancing coverage, repeatability, throughput, and cost; leverage internal staff services (manufacturing, quality, test engineering) and external partners to implement robust test strategies
  • Develop and maintain manufacturing documentation (BOMs, assembly drawings, work instructions, test procedures) and plan/drive timely release and ECN updates to support production, sustaining engineering, and product changes
  • Provide advanced support and training to installation/repair technicians and field services; lead structured troubleshooting and root-cause investigations for unusual and significant issues through resolution
  • Create and maintain high-quality engineering documentation (drawings, test procedures/reports, specifications, evaluation reports, and technical proposals/estimates) and clearly communicate status, risks, and recommendations to technical and nontechnical stakeholders
  • Coordinate and occasionally conduct testing and information gathering in end-use environments (e.g., warehouses or mine sites); interpret incomplete data using engineering judgment and drive design improvements for reliability and usability
  • Lead component lifecycle management for current product lines by assessing obsolescence risk, identifying and qualifying substitutes, and directing cross-functional change implementation (design, supply chain, manufacturing, and quality)
  • Provide guidance and coordination through coaching and mentorship of interns and less experienced engineers, including reviewing work products, setting best practices, and improving team execution

Qualifications & Competencies

Employment Eligibility & Verification

All applicants must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of the I-9 form, as required by federal law. Additionally, candidates will be required to undergo an employment verification process before beginning work. Please note that we do not offer sponsorship for work authorization (e.g., H-1B, TN, or other visas) at this time.

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (or closely related field)
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in electronic hardware design and development, with demonstrated ownership of designs from concept through production and sustaining support
  • Expert-level proficiency with PCB design tools (Altium Designer preferred; KiCad, OrCAD, Eagle, etc.), including library management and disciplined schematic/layout release practices
  • Deep understanding of analog and digital circuit design, including component selection, design margins, and practical considerations for manufacturability, reliability, and serviceability
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical test and measurement methods (DMMs, power supplies, function generators, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.), including development of repeatable verification tests and test reports
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, including structured root-cause analysis and effective containment/corrective actions
  • Very good communication skills: ability to convey technical and nontechnical information clearly through written and verbal channels and influence decisions across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and field teams
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop interns and less-experienced engineers through technical guidance, review feedback, and sharing of best practices
  • Excellent planning and execution skills: ability to organize tasks, resources, and time effectively to manage risk and achieve occasional broad objectives on schedule
  • Very good decision-making, self-motivation, and intuition: ability to make timely, accountable technical choices under pressure and use experience to make informed predictions with incomplete data
  • Demonstrated ability to direct cross-functional project work (engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and field support), coordinating stakeholders and driving closure on commitments

Working Conditions

  • Most of the work will take place in a climate-controlled office or lab setting
  • Travel to supplier/partner facilities or to customer/field locations, supporting initial product R&D and testing or troubleshooting may be required occasionally (industrial or mining sites possible)
  • Matrix employees are furnished with and required to wear safety gear such as hard hats, steel toe shoes, reflective clothing, earplugs, and safety glasses when working in those locations requiring such protective gear
