The Role
AspenTech is a global software leader helping industries meet the increasing demand for resources from a rapidly growing population in a profitable and sustainable manner. Our Digital Grid Management software suite helps electric and other utilities companies achieve superior real-time control, optimization and management for exceptional performance of complex energy networks. We are seeking sharp individuals looking for rewarding internship experience in EMS Power Systems Engineering (PSE) to work at our office in Medina, Minnesota. This is a paid position with flexible hours and the option for full-time employment upon successful completion of the internship.
You will spend the summer working on projects related to Energy Management Systems (EMS) that help transmission utilities worldwide monitor and operate the electric grid safely and reliably. At the end of the term, you will present your final project to senior leadership to demonstrate what you learned and how you helped the team meet a related goal of the department. Your work matters - every project completed by interns has been thoughtfully crafted by the team to give students an opportunity to apply their learnings in a real-world work environment. This internship provides exposure to EMS Applications such as Power Flow, Contingency Analysis, State Estimator, and other power systems analysis tools used by electric utilities around the world.
Your Impact
You will be assigned to the EMS or ADMS Power Systems Engineering team and project; in addition, you will be one of many summer interns (cohort) which gives us a unique opportunity to further expand your professional development while at AspenTech. Cohort members will have additional opportunities to share and learn from each other's internship experiences, network with AspenTech Digital Grid Management (DGM) employees, and learn about different areas within the business. Successful candidates will be able to adapt to a fast-paced environment, demonstrate initiative, and make real contributions while gaining knowledge of power systems, technologies and techniques. Projects may include:
  • Assisting with the configuration and testing of EMS or ADMS applications for customer deployments
  • Supporting power system modeling and data validation activities
  • Developing scripts or tools to automate testing and data analysis workflows
  • Creating documentation and training materials for power systems applications
  • Participating in customer meetings and gaining exposure to project delivery processes

What You'll Need
  • Working towards a BS in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Systems, or related field
  • Coursework or interest in power systems, electric circuits, or energy systems
  • Excellent organization, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a challenging environment and drive innovative solutions with dedication and persistence
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Linux / Windows operating systems, Python, or other programming languages is a plus
  • Knowledge of power flow concepts, electrical transmission systems, or SCADA systems is a plus but not required

Hourly Internship Pay Rate: $28.00 - $32.00
Work Location:
Aspen Technology has a global hybrid workplace for most of our roles. Employees are expected to work in the office 4 days per week and may work remotely 1 day per week, unless the employee has a reasonable accommodation or other approved exception to the hybrid workplace schedule. Our Internship role is based at the AspenTech Digital Grid Management Headquarters in Medina, MN.
