As an OB Surgical Technologist (CST), you will play a vital role in supporting labor and delivery procedures, including cesarean sections, while helping ensure a safe, efficient, and positive patient experience. Position Details:
Position Overview

The OB Surgical Technologist maintains professional accountability and provides technical support for patient care throughout the obstetrical experience. Working under the direction of nursing and medical staff, this role performs a wide variety of patient care, clerical support, and surgical assistance duties. Team members collaborate closely to support unit goals while maintaining Mercy's mission, values, service standards, and commitment to patient-centered care.

This position requires the ability to remain calm and effective during obstetrical emergencies, participate as an essential member of the labor and delivery team, and provide support to childbearing, postpartum, newborn, and pediatric patients as assigned.

Key ResponsibilitiesSurgical & Clinical Support
  • Prepare operating and delivery rooms using sterile surgical techniques.
  • Prepare patients for labor and delivery procedures, including cesarean sections.
  • Function as a Surgical Technologist, assisting physicians during procedures as directed.
  • Perform first or second scrub duties within the sterile field.
  • Maintain, clean, and process sterile instrumentation according to hospital policy.
  • Adhere to and promote infection prevention, patient safety, and quality standards.
Patient Care & Unit Support
  • Assist nursing staff in providing supportive care and activities of daily living (ADLs) for newborns, obstetrical, postpartum, and pediatric patients.
  • Perform designated clinical procedures and non-clinical support tasks essential to patient care and unit operations.
  • Respond effectively during obstetrical emergencies as part of the care team.
  • Support patient flow, room turnover, and efficient unit operations.
Operational Responsibilities

May assist with:

  • Patient registration and record maintenance
  • Bed control and room turnover
  • Charge capture
  • Supply inventory and stocking
  • Specimen transportation
  • Patient transportation
  • Blood glucose testing
  • Phlebotomy
  • Birth certificate data entry
  • Other duties as assigned
QualificationsEducation
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology.
Certifications
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required
    • Certification must be maintained without lapse.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
Experience
  • New graduates and experienced Surgical Technologists are encouraged to apply.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
  • Strong understanding of sterile surgical techniques and surgical instrumentation.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced labor and delivery environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, infection prevention, and quality care.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and perform efficiently during high-acuity situations and emergencies.
  • Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to safely perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation, consistent with applicable federal, state, and local laws.
