Job description

  • Position Summary
    • Under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager and under direct supervision of Pharmacists, this position is responsible for performing all of the functions of a sterile compounding pharmacy technician including, but not limited to, preparing IV admixtures using aseptic techniques as outlined in USP 797.  Accurately obtain, calculate, measure, and verify the medications used in compounding.  Adhere to policies for proper labeling of compounded sterile products (CSPs), determination of beyond use date (BUD), and proper storage of CSPs.  Maintain detailed and accurate records of compounding activities.  Follow USP 800 guidelines for the safe handling of hazardous drugs.  Perform and document daily and monthly cleanings as directed.  Monitor and record temperature, humidity, and pressure of assigned areas daily as directed.  Collaborate with pharmacists to promptly address any issues. Review medication and supple inventory daily to ensure proper stock. Maintain the IV room in a clean, organized manner.  Regularly inspect and maintain compounding equipment to ensure optimal functionality.  Report any malfunctions promptly and participate in equipment calibration as needed.  Compound all medications in a timely manner.  Prioritize stat medications or now doses over medications due later in the shift.  Perform charge capture, reconcile discrepancies and issue credits.  Check for expired medications in assigned areas.  Assess the need for bulk compounding each shift; prepare CSPs to maintain appropriate PAR levels.  Communicate to the next shift.  Assist other technicians with tasks outside of the IV room if/when all IV room tasks for the shift are completed. Stay abreast of changes in USP guidelines.  Complete required annual or biannual competency assessments in sterile compounding as directed by USP 797 and USP 800.  Assist in the education of co-workers to ensure the sterility of the cleanroom is maintained.  Assist in mentoring and training assigned staff, interns, and new co-workers with competencies and policies/procedures.  Pharmacy technicians perform assigned duties independently within the department policies and procedures but never perform duties which can only be performed by a pharmacist.  Pharmacy technicians perform assignments within established time frames and work routines may vary according to patient care priorities.

    • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Intern with the Georgia Board of Pharmacy - Required
