Assistant Professor – Department of Political Science

John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. Led by President Karol V. The Department of Political Science has 26 full‑time faculty members with a strong commitment to research excellence and student success. The department offers a major and a minor in Political Science, as well as a major in Law and Society. We serve over 1000 students across the two majors. Many of our faculty also teach in master’s programs offered through John Jay and the political science and other doctoral programs offered through CUNY’s Graduate Center.

The Department of Political Science invites applications for a tenure‑track position in American Judicial Politics and Public Law beginning Fall 2027. While we are open to a range of research interests and methodological approaches in the field, we are especially interested in candidates whose work addresses questions concerning Constitutional development, the First Amendment, equal protection, federalism, or the impact of courts on public policy. The hiring rank is Assistant Professor.

Candidates are expected to maintain an active research and publication agenda and demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring students. Teaching responsibilities include judicial process and politics, as well as upper‑level courses in constitutional law and in civil rights and civil liberties. These courses are offered in both our majors. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory research methods and the senior capstone in political science. The department also values candidates who can teach additional courses in the political science and law and society programs, and who are interested in engaging in experiential learning opportunities for students, including internships and undergraduate research. The successful candidate will also develop courses in their area of specialization, advise students, and be actively involved in departmental and College service.

Ph.D. in Political Science, although outstanding ABDs near completion will be considered. Candidates holding only a J.D. will not be considered. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, the potential for scholarly productivity, and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the department and institution.

$57,252 - $109,025 ( As of 9/1/2026 $59,256- $114,091 ) Salary commensurate with education and credentials.
