Description
GPSSample is an Android application (GPSSample - Apps on Google Play) used by public health professionals to conduct gold standard sampling of households in the field. This is the first application with the ability to enumerate all households in an area, to quickly select a sample of the households, and to distribute the selected households back to teams to conduct the field survey. This rapid sampling capacity is critical for public health professionals. The GPSSample application has been used in 14 unique surveys in 6 countries. The GPSSample Student Tester and Developer is a critical role for the GPSSample Team. You will be working with the CDC GPSSample Team (4 people), 1 Task Force for Global Health GPSSample Developer, and 1 Task Force for Global Health GPSSample Community of Practice Lead. Your role is critical!
  • 70% of the student's time will be spent on field testing the GPSSample application and requires walking around outside. The CDC Team has a detailed Testing SOP outlining studies for the student to conduct tests for and to send the GPSSample lead the zipped exported files after every study is conducted.
  • 30% of the student's time will be spent on learning the GPSSample code (developed in Kotlin) and in writing code (in Kotlin) to fix bugs or to make enhancements. To begin with, the student may work on expanding the documentation of existing code. This piece of the work will be overseen by the current GPSSample developer.

GPSSample Application Testing (70%):
  • Ability to work outdoors and traverse through neighborhoods
  • Ability to follow application test procedures and to identify issues
  • Creates Jira tickets and tracks these across the life cycle
  • Can commit to ~7 hours of field testing a week
  • Notes places to strengthen the application and increase user acceptance

The ideal candidate is detail oriented, good at following instructions, motivated, and has participated in a field survey in the past. The CDC Team lead will provide hands-on instruction for the first round of testing, but afterwards, she expects that the SOP will be sufficient.
GPSSample Development (30%), preferred:
  • Experience with Kotlin programing language
  • Experience using Android Studio IDE
  • Git version control
  • Has own computer. Mac (preferred) or PC

The ideal candidate will have experience in application development or a minimum exposure to the Kotlin language. Use of Git for version control in the past is preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate in a college or university offering a four year degree.
  • Completion of freshman year or higher and in good academic standing.
  • College transcripts required as part of interview process.
