Provides medical nutrition therapy to patients of different age groups using appropriate standards, validated assessment tools and evidence based standards of practice in accordance with the department's policy. Develops, implements and communicates the patient's nutritional plan of care which are documented in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR). Provides counseling to inpatients and outpatients on their nutritional needs.


A day in the life of a Dietitian at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Provides age-appropriate medical nutrition therapy to meet patients/clients needs.
  • Identifies nutrition risks and problems. Develops and implements individualized nutrition care plans. Reviews nutrition risk reports to identify patients at high risk.
  • Recommends, changes/modifies diet order, enteral feeding orders and parenteral nutrition prescriptions according to department policy.
  • Utilizes the Nutrition Care Process as recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in accordance with JFK University Medical Center guidelines and policy on Nutrition screening, prioritization, assessment and follow-up. Reviews medical records for relevant information.
  • Performs as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Provides nutrition education to patients/clients and communicates with the patient and healthcare team as outlined in department policy.
  • Discusses recommendations with physician, healthcare team, patient/designated care giver, including but not limited to, the diet modification, feeding options and other nutrition care plans.
  • Comprehensive assessments and interventions are clearly documented in the patient's EMR in accordance with the department policy and in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Discussions/education are documented as outlined in department policy.
  • Provides community and outpatient nutrition services as assigned.
  • Participate in performance improvement programs related to patient care and service.
  • Participate in unit , department or facility committees. 
  • Maintain competency and professional development related to nutrition trends, research, policy, certification, standards of practice.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned. 
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or related field from an approved college.
  • Completion of supervised practice hours in dietetic internship.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Experience with current Electronic Medical Records System.
  • Experience with Foodservice System Applications.
  • Minimum of 1 year hospital experience as clinical dietitian in an Acute Care Facility.

Licenses and Certifications Required: 

  • Registration with CDR for Registered Dietitian certification within 6 months of hire date.
  • Licensure or Certification as required by local state regulations.
