What does an internship iOS developer do at a startup?

An Internship iOS Developer at a startup assists in designing, developing, and testing applications for Apple's iOS platform. Interns typically work with experienced developers to learn coding best practices, debug issues, and contribute to new features or updates. They gain hands-on experience with tools like Xcode, Swift, and sometimes Objective-C, while participating in team meetings and agile development processes. The fast-paced environment of a startup offers opportunities to learn quickly and make meaningful contributions to real projects.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an internship iOS developer expect at a startup?

As an iOS Developer intern at a startup, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects, often contributing directly to the core product or new features. Responsibilities may include implementing UI components, fixing bugs, writing unit tests, and collaborating closely with designers and senior developers. Startups typically have smaller teams and fast-paced environments, so interns often have opportunities to take ownership of tasks, present ideas, and see the impact of their work quickly. This setting provides valuable exposure to the full app development lifecycle and fosters skill growth through mentorship and real-world problem-solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship iOS developer at a startup, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship iOS Developer at a startup, you need a solid understanding of Swift programming, iOS frameworks, and app development principles, often supported by coursework or personal projects. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication help you work well in fast-paced, collaborative environments. These skills and qualities are vital for rapidly building functional, user-friendly apps and contributing to the startup’s success.

  • Maintain full talent pipeline for startup portfolios, which will includebuilding a routing process for mid-career and senior level inquiries
  • Partner with the CEO to grow the pool of funding available to support the Startup Fellows program
  • Travel regularly to partner campuses to build and maintain relationships, attend career fairs, and host on-campus events, particularly during fall and spring recruiting seasons
Additional responsibilities
  • Develop the alumni network component of Startup Fellows
  • Lay the groundwork with university contacts that will feed the EFR campus pipeline
  • Assist in identifying additional sources of sponsor funds for Startup Fellows

  • 5+ years of professional experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience hiring and/or managing people directly
  • A strong eye for talent and sound judgment in evaluating candidates
  • Proven relationship building and relationship management skills with external stakeholders (university career centers, faculty, students, sponsors)
  • Comfort presenting and pitching to external audiences, including prospective program sponsors
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly to partner campuses within approximately a 6-hour drive radius
Preferred
  • Background in campus recruiting at a large professional services firm (e.g. Big Four), with existing university and career-office relationships
  • Career services experience at a top university
  • A background blending education and entrepreneurship
  • Familiarity with the startup or venture capital ecosystem
