Job description

Family Service Association has an exciting opportunity for an unpaid internship for a BSW student in our After School Daycare (ASDC) department.

The potential intern must have a strong sense of discretion, detailed oriented and well organized.  This internship requires a minimum commitment of 3 hours per week for 13 weeks with a semi flexible schedule Monday -Friday.

The Social Work Intern supports the Social Worker in promoting the social, emotional, and behavioral well-being of children enrolled in Kids Academy and After School Day Care programs. Under direct supervision, the intern gains practical experience in early childhood and school-age programming through observation, family engagement, resource development, behavior support, and collaboration with staff.
This internship is designed to provide meaningful learning experiences while supporting the mission of Family Service Association. All activities are completed under the supervision of the program Social Worker and the Director of Children’s Development Services, as well as within the student's university requirements.
As an intern you will:
  • Observe classroom and after school environments to learn effective behavior support strategies.
  • Assist the Social Worker with documenting observations and maintaining confidential records.
  • Support implementation of social-emotional learning activities and small group programming.
  • Assist in preparing behavior support materials, visual schedules, social stories, and classroom resources.
  • Help identify and organize community resources for children and families.
  • Assist with family engagement events, open houses, and family nights.
  • Participate in site tours for prospective families as appropriate.
  • Observe meetings with staff, families, and community partners when confidentiality permits.
  • Assist with maintaining records related to referrals, IEPs, 504 Plans, and Individual Health Care Plans (IHCPs).
  • Support the coordination of referrals and follow-up communication under supervision.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and supervision sessions.
  • Assist with developing social-emotional activities and classroom interventions.
  • Provide age-appropriate engagement and support for children under staff supervision.
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards in accordance with agency policies and university expectations.
  • Complete all required internship documentation and learning objectives.

Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited program in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, Counseling, Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or a related field.
  • Internship placement must be approved by the student's college or university.
  • Demonstrated interest in serving children and families, coupled with strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work collaboratively with staff, children, and families required.
  • Experience working with children is preferred.
