Job Summary:

Canterbury Park is looking for outgoing and energetic individuals to join our entertainment team as an intern. Responsibilities include interacting with customers, assisting with the execution of promotions and sponsorship fulfillment during Canterbury Park’s robust live racing and event calendar. The ideal candidate should be professional, a hard-working team player with exceptional writing skills, a creative mindset, and a strong customer focus, dedicated to delivering outstanding guest experiences for fans attending live racing events at Canterbury Park. Responsible for supporting the Company’s mission, vision, and values by providing an unparalleled experience of fun and entertainment.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the various entertainment responsibilities: promotions, event production, communication, and customer service.
  • Develop a basic understanding of the role of entertainment in an organization.
  • Understand the “race day” production and how each function an organization works together to meet common goals.
  • Learn the logistics and organizational skills that go into event planning and production.
  • Develop the skills to successfully work as a team with group of interns, and other members of the Entertainment Department

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead by example.
  • Responsible for maintaining a high degree of hospitality, as well as a positive and professional demeanor at all times.
  • Creates high levels of morale, fosters teamwork, inspires collaboration, and provides suggestions for growth to management.
  • Help plan and deliver fun for our guests.
  • Work directly with the race day Media and Announcer team and Partnership Director to develop a clean and coordinated run of show, including drafting and organizing race day live reads and traffic for production.
  • Brainstorm, create, and execute live on track promotional bits.
  • Assist with execution of all Canterbury Park “race day” promotions and sponsorship activations, including set-up, takedown and selecting contestants for on-track promotions.
  • Coordinate the execution of events with other departments such as food and beverage, catering, partnerships and facilities if needed.
  • Ensure proper signage and digital advertising is in place for all events and sponsors.
  • Take leadership during one or more race day events, such as, Dog Race Days, from start to finish.
  • Assist with the execution of Canterbury Park’s Ram Trucks Rodeo and Concert and Comedy Series.
  • Assist in vendor recruitment for summer events, such as Beer Fest, Ram Trucks Rodeo, Food Truck Festivals & more.
  • Track deliverables every live race day for each corporate partner, sponsor and advertiser and provide a recap per contractual obligations.
  • Assist with grassroots marketing initiatives by representing Canterbury Park at a variety of offsite events throughout the season such as community events, fairs, rodeos, trade shows.
  • Assist guests with understanding multiple facets of promotions, contests, special events, etc.
  • Other administrative duties to include: mailings, data input, data collection, email requests, fan requests, sponsorship fulfillment, and other duties as assigned.
  • May be called upon to assist Guest Services team with ticket scanning, distribution of programs, and other Live Racing duties.
  • May be called upon to conduct tours of facility, live on-microphone promotions and taped internal commercials.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Pursuing or has recently acquired an Associate or Bachelor’ degree in advertising, marketing, business, events, communications or journalism or equivalent experience in a similar industry.
  • Candidate must have flexible schedule and will be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the company, including weekends and evenings.
  • Must be able to interact with guests, co-workers and vendors in a professional, courteous manner.
  • Must be adaptable, versatile and tactful in dealings with the public.
  • Must have basic computer knowledge, including the use of Microsoft Suites & Canva
  • The ability to learn quickly and work well under pressure is essential.
  • Must be able to pass Canterbury Park’s pre-employment screening which includes a criminal background check, verification of work history, Drug Screening, and Canterbury Park Safe Driving Policy.
  • Must be able to attain a Minnesota Racing Commission (MRC) license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of racing and Canterbury Park’s facility is a plus, but not necessary.
  • Knowledge of horse racing industry is a plus, but not necessary.
  • Knowledge and understanding of advertising, promotions and corporate sponsorship programs.
