At Navy Federal, Internal Audit's goal is to provide independent, objective assurance and advisory services designed to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the risk management process. Internal Audit accomplishes its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to auditing to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk mitigation across all facets of the business.
Internal Audit includes a diverse range of professionals including certified auditors, subject matter experts who specialize in IT, finance, fraud, regulatory requirements, and data, as well as strategic personnel, all working collaboratively to ensure a seamless experience for Navy Federal and its members.
Navy Federal is growing and the environment in which we operate is rapidly evolving, posing new and unique risks to the enterprise. As a result, Internal Audit must continuously adapt to provide assurance to our business partners through a risk-based approach that evaluates the effectiveness of governance, risk management, and the internal control environment.
The Summer Associate will be a member of the Internal Audit Technology & Analytics Team composed of data analysts and other technology-focused personnel. The team employs quantitative tools and techniques to support strategic initiatives like the expansion of the Continuous Risk Assessment Program, in addition to performing data-driven, 100% population testing on audits.
The Summer Associate will work in a hybrid capacity and report to leadership at our Vienna, VA, Winchester VA or Pensacola, FL campus. Responsibilities could include applying data analysis, dashboarding and reporting skillsets to provide actionable insights to management and executive leadership.
The Summer Associate Program is a 12-week internship program beginning in May 2027 and ending in August 2027. Students will work on impactful projects and meaningful work during their internship. To qualify for this position, applicants must be currently pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university and have an anticipated graduation date of December 2027 or later.
Responsibilities
  • Use exploratory data analysis, statistical analysis, and other techniques to assess levels of risk within a process
  • Develop dashboards and other visual aids to communicate insights and actionable intelligence to management
  • Document and maintain project plans and other supporting documentation for analytic work products
  • Support Technology & Analytics personnel in the acquisition, cleaning, and transformation of data sets in preparation for additional analysis
  • Assist with the creation of reports to communicate observations and recommendations to the rest of the department
  • Actively leverage Microsoft Copilot and AI agents as key tools in completing the summer project, to enhance research, analysis, automation, and deliverable development.
  • Maintain the highest level of customer support through proactive identification and support of implementation of continuous improvement initiatives
  • Communicate system and technical concerns to management, ensure current information is shared in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with others throughout your internship, including with other Summer Associates
  • Work well within the team environment, take on challenging stretch assignments for professional growth and development, and have fun!

Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher in Data Science, Data Analytics, Statistics, Business, Finance, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Familiarity with tools such as Excel, Power BI, Tableau, Python, Copilot or other AI, and SQL
  • Effective research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in following, interpreting, and applying relevant data/instructions to guidelines, procedures, practices, and regulations
  • Interest in risk management, audit, and/or enterprise governance
