What is an internship in genealogy?

An internship in genealogy is a temporary position that provides hands-on experience in researching family history and tracing ancestry. Interns typically work with professional genealogists, historical societies, or archives, assisting with data collection, document analysis, and genealogical research projects. This type of internship helps individuals develop research skills, learn about historical records, and understand best practices in the field of genealogy. It is ideal for students or enthusiasts who are considering a career in genealogy, history, or archival studies.

What types of projects and research might I be involved in during a genealogy internship?

As a genealogy intern, you can expect to work on a variety of research projects, such as constructing family trees, analyzing historical records, and assisting with digitization of archival materials. You may also help with client casework, including searching census data, birth and death records, or immigration documents. Interns often collaborate closely with professional genealogists, archivists, and librarians, gaining hands-on experience in both independent research and team-based projects. This exposure can help you build valuable skills and connections for a future career in genealogy or archival research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Genealogy Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Genealogy Intern, you need research proficiency, attention to detail, and foundational knowledge of historical records and family history documentation, often supported by coursework in history or genealogy. Familiarity with genealogy software, online databases like Ancestry.com, and digital archiving tools is commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and organizational skills help interns interpret records and present findings clearly. These skills are vital for accurately tracing lineages, verifying information, and contributing to reliable genealogical research.
