Summary

Staff Physician (Emergency Room)

Qualifications

Applicants must meet basic and additional requirements as specified in the job announcement. Candidates completing training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected, pending fulfillment of all requirements. Current VA physicians who met the previous qualification standard at the time of initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship (Non-citizens only when no qualified citizens can be recruited per VA policy)
  • Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA-approved school
  • Full, unrestricted medical license in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia
  • Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board-certifiable eligibility (including ACGME, AOA) or equivalent post-graduation practice per the specified pathways (see details below)
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to self or others

Additional details on residency pathways:

  • Approved programs: ACGME or AOA accredited core specialty or fellowship (as completed for the year)
  • OR 1 year of post-medical-school training (internship, first year of residency, transitional year) plus 2 years of independent practice under a full license in the U.S.
  • OR non-U.S. residency followed by at least 3 years of verified independent U.S. practice related to the desired position
  • PRP exceptions for residents, certain surgical residents, and highly qualified candidates as per local policy
Duties
  • Clinical Responsibilities (100%)
    • Perform assessments and examinations on all present patients
    • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests necessary for ED evaluation
    • Provide attending physician oversight to residents and mid-level providers
    • Stabilize all critically ill or injured patients
    • Determine admission versus safe discharge with appropriate follow‑up
    • Discuss treatment plan with patient/family/caregiver following COBRA guidelines
    • Perform medication reconciliation with all patients
    • Participate in QA through chart reviews and support applicable ED performance measures
    • Coordinate care with consultants as appropriate
    • Support occupational health, fire protection, and safety programs per approved standards
    • Report to the Assistant Chief – Medical Service
