What is an internship in fintech?

An internship in fintech is a temporary position, typically for students or recent graduates, at a company that operates in the financial technology sector. Interns work on projects related to digital payments, online banking, blockchain, data analysis, or software development under the guidance of experienced professionals. The goal is to gain practical experience, develop technical and business skills, and understand how technology is transforming the financial industry.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a fintech internship?

As a Fintech intern, you'll typically engage in a variety of projects such as assisting with data analysis, supporting the development or testing of financial applications, and conducting market research on emerging technologies. You may also collaborate with cross-functional teams, like product managers, software engineers, and compliance specialists, to help deliver innovative financial solutions. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to both the technical and business sides of Fintech, helping you build practical skills and industry insight.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in fintech?

To thrive in a Fintech internship, you need a solid understanding of finance principles, analytical thinking, and familiarity with basic programming or data analysis, often supported by relevant coursework or a related degree in progress. Exposure to tools such as Excel, SQL, Python, or fintech platforms, and knowledge of compliance standards, can be highly valuable. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability help interns stand out in fast-paced, innovative environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing effectively to projects, adapting to emerging technologies, and supporting the dynamic needs of fintech teams.

Job description

Surlamer Investments is a Newport Beach-based private investment firm with a portfolio spanning algorithmic hedge funds, public markets, and technology-based private ventures.

We are incubating a FinTech startup at the intersection of AI and public markets, developing tools that give private investors institutional-grade decision-making capabilities through AI, large language models (LLMs), and advanced algorithms.

This role is best suited for candidates with a strong technical foundation and an interest in financial markets and data-driven applications. You will work closely with engineers, analysts, and leadership to implement, test, and continuously improve core platform functionality, contributing directly to system performance, reliability, and product evolution.

Program:

  • Job Type: Internship
  • Pay: $35/hour
  • Length: 10 weeks | Potential for longer-term in the future
  • Time Commitment: 40 hours/week

Responsibilities

  • Contribute directly to the core codebase by implementing and improving features that impact platform performance and functionality
  • Contribute to backend infrastructure development for reliability and speed of execution (Cloud, AWS, Terraform, CI/CD)
  • Analyze existing systems and identify opportunities to improve performance, scalability, and reliability, and execute on those improvements
  • Design and optimize APIs and backend services that support financial data processing and platform operations
  • Build and enhance data pipelines and integrations with external financial data sources, ensuring accuracy and efficiency
  • Debug complex issues and improve overall code quality and system stability
  • Collaborate with engineers and analysts to translate business and product requirements into well-structured technical solutions
  • Evaluate system behavior and user workflows to propose and implement meaningful technical enhancements, not just incremental fixes

Qualifications

  • Strong programming skills in Python and JavaScript are required, with the ability to read, understand, and improve existing code
  • Soon-to-be or recent graduate from a competitive university with a background in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field
  • Must be in the final semester/quarter of an academic program, a recent graduate, or otherwise able to commit to 40 hours per week on-site for the duration of the internship
  • Understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including algorithms, APIs, and system design principles
  • Experience debugging and improving backend systems
  • Experience integrating APIs and working with external data sources
  • Financial markets, algorithmic trading, and fundamental analysis knowledge is highly preferred
  • Must be able to work on-site in Newport Beach, CA
