Environmental Education Internship
Full-time internship,
Must be at least 21 years of age at the start of the internship.
Full-time: approx. 22-23 weeks
Application Deadlines:
SPRING (Last week of January - End of June) - Deadline is October 1st.
FALL (Mid July - Mid December) - Deadline is April 1st.
Position Overview
Environmental Education Interns (EE Interns) at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center engage diverse audiences with environmental and conservation themes through a range of learning experiences aligned with the Environmental Engagement Department's purpose of facilitating individuals' discovering their roles and responsibilities in the natural world.
Interns will gain experience in:
  • Providing interpretative, hands-on guest experiences related to conservation and the environment.
  • Utilizing informal education methods to educate, connect, and inspire a wide range of audiences including general park visitors, individual families, and groups such as school students and scouting organizations.
  • Leading or assisting with educational programs in a variety of settings, formats, and lengths.
  • Discovering and enhancing an informal, interpretive education skillset, including assisting with activity and program development.

Intern Duties and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of Environmental Education Interns includes the following:
  • Help develop and present education programs and special events
  • Provide excellent customer service for guests
  • Lead engaging and interpretive tours of Fossil Rim Wildlife Center
  • Facilitate guest exploration and discovery through activity stations, Conservation Investigations, nature exploration trail programming, educational programming, and roving interpretation
  • Host groups on-site for tours, day programs, and overnight programs
  • Drive Fossil Rim vehicles on and off-site in a variety of roles, including effectively guiding a tour while driving a tour vehicle
  • Interpret local and exotic flora and fauna for guests
  • Assist with general cleaning and maintenance of EE Department facilities including but not limited to trail maintenance, cleaning after programs, and assisting with food service for camps
  • Assist with ectotherm animal husbandry. Note: This is not a daily duty for EE Interns.
  • Ensure compliance with Fossil Rim's mission and vision
  • Serve as a Fossil Rim representative during off-site events

Qualifications:
Experience working with children, the public, and/or in an educational setting is required.
Candidates must have excellent communication skills, be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, and be willing to work an atypical schedule (including nights and weekends). An undergraduate degree in biology, environmental science, education, or a related discipline is preferred. Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and a driving record that allows for Fossil Rim insurance coverage when driving company vehicles.
International applicants must have a J1 or B1 visa before arrival. Fossil Rim cannot sponsor or assist with the visa process.
Stipend/Housing:
  • $400/month stipend
  • Free onsite housing in a shared living environment is mandatory during your internship
