Internship Equine Therapy typically involves observation and assisting under supervision, often for students or those new to the field. Equine Therapy Assistants usually have some certifications and support licensed therapists in delivering therapy. Both roles operate in similar environments but differ mainly in experience and responsibilities.

What responsibilities can I expect during an equine therapy internship, and how much direct client interaction is typically involved?

As an Equine Therapy intern, you can expect a mix of hands-on and observational responsibilities such as assisting with horse care, preparing therapy sessions, maintaining therapy spaces, and supporting certified therapists during client sessions. While direct interaction with clients depends on your experience and the organization's policies, interns often help facilitate safe environments for both clients and horses and may gradually take on more interactive roles under supervision. Collaboration with therapists, barn staff, and sometimes other interns is common, providing a supportive team environment. This role offers valuable exposure to both therapeutic and animal care practices, helping you build foundational skills for a future career in equine-assisted therapy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an equine therapy intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Equine Therapy Intern, you generally need a background in psychology, social work, or animal science, along with a strong interest in therapeutic practices involving horses. Familiarity with equine care, safety protocols, and documentation systems is often required, and certifications such as first aid or PATH Intl. training can be advantageous. Excellent communication, patience, and empathy are vital soft skills for building trust with clients and working collaboratively with therapy teams. These skills ensure the safety, effectiveness, and positive impact of equine therapy sessions for clients with diverse needs.

What is an internship in equine therapy?

An internship in equine therapy is a hands-on learning experience where students or recent graduates work alongside certified equine therapy professionals to gain practical skills in the field. Interns typically assist with therapeutic sessions, help care for horses, and may participate in administrative tasks. This type of internship provides valuable exposure to therapeutic techniques that use horses to support clients with physical, emotional, or developmental challenges. It is a great opportunity for those interested in careers in therapy, psychology, or animal-assisted interventions to gain real-world experience. Interns often learn about horse behavior, client interaction, and the ethical considerations involved in equine-assisted services.
