Internship Environment information

What is an internship environment?

Internship environments refer to the settings and conditions in which interns work during their internship programs. These environments can include corporate offices, laboratories, remote workspaces, non-profit organizations, or government agencies. The environment often shapes the intern's experience, influencing factors such as mentorship, learning opportunities, workplace culture, and the types of tasks assigned. A positive internship environment supports professional growth and helps interns gain practical skills relevant to their field.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during an internship in an environmental field?

As an intern in the environmental sector, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as conducting research on sustainability practices, assisting with environmental impact assessments, collecting and analyzing field data, or supporting community outreach programs. Your daily tasks may include collaborating with scientists, engineers, or policy analysts, attending team meetings, and preparing reports or presentations. This hands-on experience helps you gain practical skills, understand industry challenges, and build professional connections that can support your future career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an environmental internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Environmental Internship, you need a basic understanding of environmental science concepts, data collection, and analysis, typically supported by coursework in environmental studies or related fields. Familiarity with GIS software, laboratory equipment, and Microsoft Office Suite is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help interns effectively contribute to projects and collaborate with diverse groups. These skills and qualities ensure interns can support environmental initiatives, gain hands-on experience, and prepare for future roles in the field.

Here are some examples of technical projects our previous Evonik summer interns have worked on:

  • Process Engineering Intern: Contributed to the startup activities of a new chemical process, including updating procedures, redlining P&IDs, and creating Gantt charts to enhance process efficiency
  • Research & Development Intern: Engaged in the development of Evonik's Eudragit aqueous dispersion polymer coatings, which are used to provide a protective layer for pills, tablets, and capsules, effectively controlling the release and delivery of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs)
  • Production Engineering Intern: Reviewed and redlined technical drawings for the integration of new flow meter on a centrifuge, ensuring compliance with site engineering standards

By choosing Evonik, you will also have the opportunity to meet executives that are apart of Evonik's North American Leadership Team (NALT), learn more about Evonik's business portfolio and network with your peers through a virtual Let's Connect Series. You can even join an Employee Resource Group at Evonik to connect with like-minded individuals, enhance your professional development, and contribute to a culture of inclusion and innovation that empowers every voice! #earlycareers
