Job description

New Destiny's mission is to end the cycle of domestic violence and homelessness for low-income families and individuals by developing and connecting them to safe, permanent, affordable housing and services. To achieve its mission, New Destiny builds and manages housing with on-site services; offers innovative programs that assist survivors in finding and retaining affordable housing; and works to expand access to permanent housing resources for survivors. New Destiny is the largest provider of supportive housing for domestic violence survivors in New York and is a leading advocate in the effort to obtain the resources needed to end family homelessness in New York City.

Location - 271-291 Bainbridge Street, Brooklyn, NY 11233


Job Purpose
The Porter helps to ensure that the building remains clean and served. The Porter's main purpose is to ensure the building's cleanliness and assist the Building Superintendent with any task that supports the building's ongoing functioning. The Porter will collaborate as needed with the on-site social service staff to provide assistance to the cleanliness of the program space. The Porter will interact with the tenants in a trauma-informed capacity. The Porter must be reliable, honest, and able to work independently and efficiently.


Duties and Responsibilities
New Destiny is staffed by an extraordinary group of hard-working professionals that are fully committed to our mission to end the cycle of homelessness and abuse. We believe all staff working with our tenants and clients, starting with our social services team but including building staff and management, should receive trauma-informed training and be committed to helping our survivors find stability. New Destiny is building out its own property management department and as such is seeking a Porter that can bring significant experience to help shape this new position and set us up for success with managing our buildings.

The responsibilities include:
Clean and maintain the sidewalks of the buildings up to one foot past the curb.
Empty the compactor machine daily, ensuring the compactor room remains clean.
Sort recyclables and put out trash on collection days in their designated locations.
Sweep the building (hallways, staircases, community rooms, bathrooms, laundry room, outdoor spaces, offices, elevators, lobby, etc.) daily as needed.
Mop the building floors (hallways, staircases, community rooms, bathrooms, laundry room, outdoor spaces, offices, elevators, lobby, etc.) two to three times a week and as needed.
Assist the Super when needed in simple repairs, painting, moving items, turning over units, etc.
Perform routine and specialized cleaning tasks throughout the public and office spaces including dusting, vacuuming, sanitizing restrooms and public areas.
Proficient in the safe and proper use of necessary cleaning equipment to maintain appearance of floors (buffing, shampooing, stripping, etc.).
Skilled in using hand trucks, dollies, and other equipment facilitate the movement of items within thebuilding(s).
Respond appropriately to tenants, ensuring all work is done in a trauma-informed manner.
Attend internal trainings as scheduled.
Ability to use tools and equipment properly and safely.
Ability to work in all weather conditions.
Ability to move items up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to work standing up for at least a 7 hour period.


Compensation/Benefits
The hourly rate for this position is $20 per hour. This is a full-time position, PTO paid holidays and 401(k) after accrued hours. EOE
