Job description

The Document Imaging Service Center (DISC) is a worksite developed by the Boston Public Schools STRIVE Program. DISC offers relevant and meaningful internships to Boston Public High School students with significant disabilities and at-risk youth, and has been doing so for over a decade. All DISC interns engage in real-world work, with opportunities available year-round.
The continued success of the DISC internships is largely due to the strong partnership between STRIVE/DISC and the City of Boston's Division of Youth Engagement & Employment.
DISC is a stand-alone component of the Boston Public Schools STRIVE Program and is supervised by Donna Hannon, who has been involved with City of Boston youth program funding since 1994. This longstanding partnership has led to successful outcomes for students from the disability community, offering valuable experience that they might not have had otherwise.
- DISC interns are trained to use Kodak Capture Software and Kodak i4300 scanners.
- Interns prepare documents for scanning by removing staples, rivets, fasteners, and repairing any torn or damaged documents with tape.
- Interns organize documents alphanumerically and sort work into designated batches of up to 50 documents. They also scan and index documents, entering key data such as names, dates of birth, student ID numbers, and social security numbers.
- Interns perform quality control to ensure the accuracy of indexed work.
- Interns prepare and catalog confidential documents for shredding.
- Interns are trained to answer the business phone and take messages.
- All youth employment participants are identified by STRIVE staff members and must be between the ages of 18-22. They must have a significant disability or be considered at-risk youth.
- Participants must be able to travel to DISC or be willing to receive travel training.
- Participants must attend a formal interview with Donna Hannon, which includes a situational assessment. Applicants will be invited to participate in a paid internship if there is a potential job match.
- All DISC interns must understand and sign a confidentiality agreement with Boston Public Schools.
