Job description


BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems (SMS) is seeking a Systems Engineer to support the development of advanced RF, radar, communications, and electronic sensing systems throughout the system lifecycle. This role contributes to system requirements development, architecture definition, system integration, performance analysis, and verification while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
The Systems Engineer will work closely with Lead Systems Engineers, Chief Engineers, software, hardware, FPGA, digital signal processing, and test organizations to transform mission needs into well-defined system requirements and integrated system solutions.
The ideal candidate possesses a solid analytical background and experience developing complex RF, communications, radar, digital signal processing, software-defined radio, embedded, or aerospace systems. This position offers the opportunity to work on challenging national security programs utilizing advanced RF technologies and modern digital engineering practices.
The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers' missions. Our collaborative, cross-functional teams are committed to innovation, integrity, continual learning and strong execution.
What You'll Do:
  • Support development, decomposition, allocation, and management of system requirements.
  • Support development and maintenance of logical and physical system architectures.
  • Perform engineering trade studies and system performance analyses.
  • Define subsystem interfaces and interface requirements.
  • Support development of RF system architectures, digital signal processing solutions, and hardware/software allocation strategies.
  • Collaborate with software, FPGA, hardware, and test engineers to ensure successful system integration.
  • Support system integration, verification, validation, and performance characterization.
  • Develop verification methods and support requirements verification and traceability.
  • Analyze system performance and identify opportunities for optimization.
  • Participate in technical reviews including SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, and PRR.
  • Develop technical documentation, engineering analyses, and customer deliverables.
  • Utilize systems engineering and digital engineering tools to support architecture development, requirements management, and technical traceability.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.
Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

Required Skills and Education
  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 6 or more years related experience
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Degree must be from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Ability to obtain a DoW security clearance is required.
  • Experience applying systems engineering principles throughout the system development lifecycle.
  • Experience developing and managing system requirements.
  • Experience supporting system architecture development, interface definition, and engineering trade studies.
  • Experience supporting RF systems, radar systems, communications systems, digital signal processing, software-defined radios, FPGA-based systems, embedded systems, or related technologies.
  • Experience supporting system integration, verification, validation, or test activities.
  • Excellent analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.

A security clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.
Preferred Skills and Education
  • Experience with radar, RF payloads, software-defined radios, satellite communications, electronic warfare, or digital communications systems.
  • Experience with digital signal processing, detection and estimation theory, beamforming, channelization, or waveform processing.
  • Experience using MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Simulink, or similar engineering analysis tools.
  • Experience with FPGA development or hardware/software co-design.
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools such as Jama or DOORS.
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) concepts and digital engineering tools.
  • Experience supporting development-to-production transitions.
  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related technical discipline preferred.
