Job description

Job Description Fall or Winter 2026 Semesters The MSP Cyber Section's Computer Crimes Unit (CCU) offices in Bridgeport are seeking digital forensics and criminal justice students enrolled in a post-secondary educational program that are interested in an unpaid internship with the Michigan State Police for the Fall or Winter 2026 semesters. This internship would be approximately 10-20 hours per week, for approximately 12 weeks, with start and end dates to be determined by the requirements of the selected individual's educational institution. The CCU provides investigative support in the seizure, acquisition, and analysis of digital evidence including digital device forensic examinations for the law enforcement community.

The CCU also has oversight over the statewide Michigan Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. The task force includes over 50 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies who work together to investigate offenders who use the internet, online communication systems, or computer technology to sexually exploit children. Students applying for this internship should have a strong understanding of digital forensics software and techniques, and interests in the digital forensics and criminal justice fields.

Required Education and Experience The selected individual must be at least 18 years of age, be continuously enrolled in a digital forensics program at a post-secondary educational institution (with a minimum of six credit hours per term or semester, where they will receive credit for this internship), have a valid operator's license, and pass a fingerprint-based "Criminal Justice Information Systems" background check. Additional Requirements and Information During their internship with the CCU, the selected student will have an opportunity to: Participate in criminal investigations involving digital evidence. Learn about the forensic capture and analysis process for digital evidence.

Analyze and compile data into formats needed for investigative tasks. Utilize specialized forensic software and equipment to support investigative actions. Prepare forensics reports regarding analyzed evidence.

Provide educational training to end users on cyber security related topics. **Due to the nature of this internship, it is likely that the selected student will be exposed to material that may be inappropriate, offensive, and sexual in nature.** For questions regarding the CCU Non-Paid Internship, please contact D/Lt.
