NSC Staffing is seeking a Diesel Mechanic - Outside Machinist Combo to support shipyard operations and vessel maintenance in San Diego, CA. This opportunity is ideal for experienced mechanics skilled in diesel systems, propulsion systems, and auxiliary equipment aboard marine vessels. Position Overview:
As a Marine Diesel Mechanic, you will install, repair, maintain, and test complex shipboard mechanical systems including steam, turbine, diesel, and electrical propulsion systems. You will support the full mechanical lifecycle from initial installation through preventative maintenance and overhaul. Work may involve both in-shop fabrication and onboard ship repairs in a fast-paced, safety-conscious environment.
Key Responsibilities:
• System Installation & Repair: Install, maintain, and repair ship propulsion and auxiliary systems including steam turbines, diesel engines, rudders, steering gears, elevators, and Navy UNREP systems.
• Fluid Systems Maintenance: Work with pumps, compressors, purifiers, actuators, valves, and heat exchangers.
• Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, hydraulic/pneumatic schematics, and technical manuals to guide installations and repairs.
• Precision Work: Use precision tools such as micrometers and dial indicators to meet alignment and dimensional tolerances.
• Machining Tools: Use hand tools, power tools, and portable machining tools to support repairs onboard vessels and in-shop.
• Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Identify mechanical issues and recommend solutions through testing and inspection of equipment and systems.
• Safety & Housekeeping: Maintain a clean and safe work area while using PPE and following OSHA and company safety protocols.
• Preventative Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance on mechanical systems to maximize operational reliability and reduce downtime.
• Field Work: Climb ladders, enter confined spaces, and work aboard ships as needed to complete tasks in diverse environments.
• Other Duties: Perform additional tasks relevant to the trade as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 3+ years of experience in a mechanical or marine environment OR completion of a Diesel or Aircraft Mechanic training program.
• Former U.S. Navy personnel with MM (BT), AD, CM, EN, GS, HT, or MR ratings are encouraged to apply.
• Proficient with both Imperial and Metric measuring systems.
• Ability to understand geometry, trigonometry, and use decimals/fractions in shop math.
• Strong understanding of hydraulic, pneumatic, propulsion, and auxiliary mechanical systems.
• Comfortable working in confined spaces, at heights, or in areas with environmental exposure.
• Able to lift and maneuver equipment/tools up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment:
This position requires physical stamina, color vision, and the ability to work in various environments - including onboard ships, in shipyards, and outdoors. You may be exposed to noise, heights, confined spaces, and other industrial conditions. Safety awareness and compliance with PPE protocols are essential.
