About the Africentric Personal Development Shop

The Africentric Personal Development Shop (APDS) is dedicated to strengthening individuals, families, and communities by providing culturally responsive behavioral health, prevention, recovery, and family support services. Through counseling, education, youth and family programming, addiction recovery services, and community initiatives, APDS empowers individuals to achieve personal wellness and long-term success.

Role Overview

The Social Media Specialist Intern will support the Communications team by developing engaging social media content that increases awareness of the Africentric Personal Development Shop's programs, services, events, and community impact. This role focuses on creating compelling, culturally relevant content that educates, inspires, and connects individuals and families with the resources and support available through APDS.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and publish engaging content across APDS social media channels, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, and YouTube, with a primary focus on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
  • Produce reels, short-form videos, graphics, and other digital content that promote APDS programs, behavioral health resources, family services, prevention initiatives, and community events.
  • Attend APDS programs and events to capture photo and video content for social media and digital marketing.
  • Leverage OpusClip and other editing tools to transform long-form content into engaging short-form videos.
  • Write compelling captions and assist with content planning and editorial calendars.
  • Support community management by monitoring comments, messages, and audience engagement.
  • Monitor social media analytics and recommend content improvements to increase reach, engagement, and community awareness.
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to develop storytelling content that highlights client success stories, organizational impact, and the mission of APDS.
Requirements:
  • Current student pursuing a degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Media, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging reels, graphics, and short-form video content.
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms, trends, algorithms, and emerging content formats.
  • Proficiency with Canva, CapCut, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar creative tools.
  • Excellent written communication skills, creativity, and attention to detail.
  • Portfolio or examples of social media content required.

Time Commitment:

Approximately 8 hours per day, up to 5 days per week (up to 40 hours total), with flexibility in scheduling based on availability and project needs. Some evening and weekend availability may be required for events
