What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Design System, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Design System Internship, you need foundational knowledge in UI/UX design principles, proficiency in design tools, and a relevant academic background such as graphic design or human-computer interaction. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and basic understanding of front-end frameworks or design tokens is typically required. Strong collaboration, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make an intern stand out in this role. These abilities are crucial for creating cohesive, scalable design assets and ensuring alignment across multidisciplinary product teams.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as an intern in a design system team?

As an intern on a design system team, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks, such as creating and maintaining UI components, documenting design patterns, and collaborating with designers and developers to ensure consistency across products. You may also contribute to accessibility improvements, participate in user testing, and help gather feedback from stakeholders. This role typically involves close teamwork and offers a great opportunity to learn about scalable design and cross-functional collaboration in a real-world setting.

What is an Internship Design System?

An Internship Design System refers to an internship role focused on contributing to or maintaining a design system within a company or organization. Design systems are collections of reusable components, guidelines, and standards that help ensure consistency and efficiency in digital product design. As an intern in this field, you may assist with documenting components, creating design assets, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring that the system remains up-to-date and user-friendly. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in user interface (UI), user experience (UX), and front-end development. It offers valuable experience in how large-scale design projects are managed and implemented.

Zappos is a subsidiary of Amazon that focuses on customer service technology for online fashion retailers. The Software Development Engineer II will build critical services and AI agentic workflows to enhance customer experiences, working closely with stakeholders to scope projects and launch systems.
Responsibilities:
• In this position, you'll use a variety of tools to build, provision, and test a variety of API's and services with a heavy lean towards server-side work.
• You get to use AI tools to augment work while also building AI agents for customer service scenarios.
• You start the day by finishing up the work you had in motion yesterday and pushing a CR for review.
• You notice a CR a teammate has submitted and provide them with feedback, suggesting a small change based on your knowledge of the system they are working with.
• At daily stand-up, you provide an update on your overall project, report what you’re picking up today, and point out to a teammate that they should connect with a stakeholder to unblock themselves.
• After standup, you see someone has approved your CR so you kickoff the process to push code to production.
• You head over to a meeting discussing the teams initiatives to reduce technical debt, calling out some process improvements you believe would be helpful in stopping it from emerging in the first place and ensuring they are filed correctly to be evaluated for next sprint.
• After that, you head back to your desk where you finish your day with some heads-down time working on the stories that you had mentioned picking up at standup this morning.
Qualifications:
Required:
• 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
• 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
• Experience programming with at least one software programming language
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent
Preferred:
• 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
• Usage of generative AI tools to enhance workflow efficiency, with a willingness to learn effective prompting and evaluation practices.
• Ability to recognize opportunities where generative AI could enhance products, workflows, or customer experiences.
