How much do internship desalination jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 24, 2026, the average hourly pay for internship desalination in the United States is $15.54, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $12.50 and $17.55 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are internship roles in desalination?

Internship roles in desalination typically involve supporting engineers and scientists in the research, development, and operation of systems that remove salt and other minerals from seawater or brackish water to produce fresh water. Interns may assist with laboratory testing, data analysis, equipment maintenance, and fieldwork, gaining hands-on experience with desalination technologies such as reverse osmosis and thermal distillation. These internships provide valuable industry exposure and can help students or recent graduates build skills relevant to water treatment and environmental engineering.

What types of projects or tasks can an intern expect to work on during a desalination internship?

As a desalination intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of projects such as conducting water quality analyses, supporting pilot plant operations, performing data collection and analysis, and contributing to research on new desalination technologies. Interns often collaborate with engineers and scientists to troubleshoot equipment or optimize processes. This role provides hands-on experience with laboratory instruments, exposure to real-world water treatment challenges, and opportunities to present findings to multidisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern in desalination engineering, and why are they important?

To excel as an intern in desalination, you need a basic understanding of chemical or environmental engineering principles, often supported by progress toward a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with water treatment technologies, laboratory equipment, and data analysis software like MATLAB or Excel is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns collaborate on projects and learn from experienced engineers. These skills are essential for contributing to innovative solutions and ensuring the efficiency and safety of desalination processes.

What is the difference between Internship Desalination vs Desalination Technician?

AspectInternship DesalinationDesalination Technician
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in engineering or environmental scienceAssociate's or bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, or related field
Work EnvironmentEducational setting, training sites, or entry-level industry exposureOperational facilities, water treatment plants, or industrial sites
Employer & Industry UsageInternships offered by water treatment companies, research institutions, or universitiesWater treatment plants, desalination facilities, or industrial water providers

Internship Desalination provides hands-on training and industry exposure for students or recent graduates, focusing on learning and skill development. In contrast, Desalination Technicians are trained professionals responsible for operating and maintaining desalination equipment in real-world facilities. While internships are entry-level and educational, technicians are employed roles requiring specific technical skills and certifications.
