ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
SUMMARY: The Student-Faculty Fellow will work closely with a Cal Poly Pomona faculty mentor on a research or creative project addressing issues of race, ethnicity, social justice, equity, inclusion, community well-being, or intercultural understanding. The Fellow will gain hands-on experience with the research process while contributing meaningfully to a faculty-led project with the potential for scholarly, public-facing, educational, or community impact.
The successful candidate will be curious, dependable, organized, and eager to develop skills in research, communication, project management, and public-facing scholarship. The Fellow will work independently on assigned tasks while participating in regular meetings with the faculty mentor and, when applicable, the Weglyn Endowed Chair program.
SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):
- Assist a faculty mentor with a research, creative, policy, or community-engaged project related to racial and social justice, multicultural studies, equity, or intercultural understanding.
- Conduct literature reviews; identify relevant scholarly, policy, archival, media, or community-based sources; and prepare concise research summaries.
- Assist with data collection, organization, coding, analysis, or interpretation, as appropriate to the project.
- Help develop project materials, including research memos, annotated bibliographies, reports, presentations, educational resources, website content, or public-facing materials.
- Support the development of materials that make scholarly research accessible to students, campus partners, and broader public audiences.
- Participate in regular meetings with the faculty mentor to discuss project goals, progress, challenges, and professional development.
- Maintain organized records of research activities, sources, project materials, and completed work.
- Contribute to the preparation of a final project reflection, presentation, poster, report, or other deliverable at the conclusion of the Fellowship.
- Participate in Weglyn-sponsored programming, including opportunities to share the Fellowship experience with the campus community.
- Represent Cal Poly Pomona and the Weglyn Endowed Chair program professionally and respectfully in all project-related activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned in support of the Fellowship project and program goals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated interest in issues related to race, ethnicity, social justice, equity, inclusion, community engagement, public policy, or multicultural studies.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage assigned responsibilities with care and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively and professionally with faculty, students, staff, and community partners.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and online research tools.
- Willingness to learn new research methods, software, and professional skills as required by the project.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior experience with research, community engagement, student organizations, advocacy, public service, creative work, or related projects.
- Coursework or demonstrated experience in research methods, data analysis, ethnic studies, social sciences, public policy, education, health, or related fields.
- Experience conducting literature reviews, working with qualitative or quantitative data, or creating public-facing materials.
- Familiarity with social media, graphic design, video production, website content management, podcasting, or other forms of public communication.
- Experience working with diverse communities or engaging thoughtfully across differences in identity, background, and perspective.
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, equity, and respectful collaboration.
- Interest in graduate school, research careers, public service, community leadership, or applied professional work.
ABOUT US: As the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the Foundation offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Foundation offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality1500 management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.
The Foundation also contributes operating support to nearly 1,100 Foundation and scholarship programs every year, including Bronco Athletics and the Norman J. Priest Scholarship. In addition, the Foundation administers grants and contracts, contributes to campus security, and supports several university publications.
