THE CHALLENGE

This role is a position within the Power Markets & Origination team where the teamโ€™s primary goals are (1) origination of energy and capacity sales from operational and development assets; (2) optimization and risk management of market-driven commodity exposure; and (3) provision of analytical support and data for market-based and risk management decision making. The Director will support the teamโ€™s goals through management of ongoing portfolio exposures and obligations, origination of new transactions, optimization of the portfolio, and supporting future growth.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead market activities in key geographies, including ERCOT, ISO-NE, the Desert Southwest, CAISO and SERC.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to the team responsible for analytical support and execution of daily trading activities and structured transactions.
  • Maintain oversight of routine workflows and outcomes. Serve as the primary point of coordination for high-level communication with third-party energy managers.
  • Develop and oversee strategies for optimizing the portfolio, creating value and de-risking or hedging various exposures, including basis (both energy and natural gas), replacement power and renewable production volume.
  • Originate and execute structured deals and associated enabling agreements in support of strategies.
  • Build counterparty relationships with energy marketers, trade shops, banks, and load serving entities for structured transactions.
  • Lead market assessments and customer identification to guide the M&A team on commercialization opportunities related to acquisition targets.
  • Support Power Markets & Origination and Commercial Analytics in ad-hoc assignments relating to energy trading opportunities, portfolio risk management, M&A activities, and market research.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to travel frequently.

THE PROFILE TO SUCCEED

Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, or Finance preferred. Experience may substitute for degree.

  • 7+ years of experience leading negotiations for thermal, renewable generation and battery storage transactions, with a preference for transactions in ERCOT, ISO-NE, and CAISO markets.
  • Prior leadership of teams participating in DA markets, managing capacity obligation activity, congestion products, and volumetric exposure.
  • Strong understanding of the trajectory of western markets, including strategic views of offtake procurement.
  • Experience with various types of transaction structures and products, including HRCOs, PPAs, various revenue and fuel hedges, tolling agreements, capacity/resource adequacy, virtual transactions, congestion revenue rights (CRRs), and bilateral energy agreements.
  • Experience with standard industry contract forms (ISDA / EEI / WSPP) and complex contractual terms and conditions involved in a variety of physical and financial contractual structures for a variety of products.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Must have strong interpersonal skills to interface with all levels of company personnel and external customers.
  • Self-starter, ability to work well independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to change directions quickly between deal execution and team administration.

THE WORK ENVIRONMENT

Onward Energy is currently implementing a hybrid office environment, with team members in the office at least two days per week. The position functions in a smoke and vaping-free professional office environment. The role routinely utilizes standard office equipment such as laptop computers, phones, and scanner/photocopier.
