The Position
The Bureau of Environmental Services is seeking interns for their Operations & Maintenance group! Applications will be reviewed on a weekly basis.
Job Appointment: Casual, Part-TimeWork Schedule: Flexible hours

Collection System and Watershed O&M - Collection System O&M - 2 Positions
The Maintenance Engineering section of the Collection System division is responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of the wastewater and stormwater collection systems to achieve three major goals: prevent and/or reduce the number and impact of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), minimize asset life-cycle costs while providing an acceptable level of service, and sustain the public's investment in the sewer infrastructure by ensuring that service lives are extended as long as economically feasible.
The Collection System O&M Interns, with guidance and under supervision, will:
  • Become familiar with the activities of an engineering section in BES including:
    • Condition assessment of assets
    • Evaluating maintenance options for assets
    • Evaluating rehabilitation options for assets
    • Provide assistance to engineers within the group; identify high risk assets and ensure engineers are informed.
    • Provide quality assurance/quality control of asset inspection data for assets in the inspection program
    • Become familiar with the concepts of Asset Management principles touching on:
    • Failure modes of assets, and root causes of failure
    • Likelihood of failure
    • Consequence of failure
    • Risk assessments of assets

  • Update the database of CCTV videos of sewers needing repairs and denote this in the Hansen database. This entails the viewing of CCTV videos and entering the appropriate defect codes in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) which requires training in the use of the Hansen® software.
  • Catalogue and update CMMS database with construction acceptance CCTV records

Treatment and Pumping O&M - Maintenance 1-Position
The BES Facilities team supports the physical spaces and infrastructure that allow staff to safely and effectively do their work. The program's directive is to establish and maintain service levels that promote a productive, safe, efficient and cost-effective work environment in compliance with applicable building, health and safety regulations, while remaining equitable, inclusive and person-centered.
The Maintenance intern, with guidance and under supervision, will:
  • Review drawings and other similar documents with the team
  • Assist in updating and improving group documentation and file organization
  • Assist in analyzing equipment and their associated Operations and Maintenance Manuals, including organizing and linking manuals to in computerized maintenance management system
  • Participate in team and stakeholder meetings
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor

Treatment and Pumping O&M - Operations - 3 Positions
Wastewater Operations group oversees the largest wastewater treatment plant for the state of Oregon. The Special Operations Group is part of Operations Division at Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant. We are the maintenance arm of Operations as well as supporting treatment and special projects.
The Operations intern, with guidance and under supervision, will:
  • Conduct preventative maintenance tasks
  • Provide Special Project support
  • Shadow the Wastewater Operator IIs as they operate the facility
  • Clean and maintain wastewater equipment and facilities
  • Help with daily operational duties
  • Participate in safety related activities and execute the work orders associated with OSHA and onsite safety policy

Treatment and Pumping O&M - Support Services (Administrative Services) - 1 Position
The Administrative Team provides customer support to the Operations and Maintenance Group and other Bureau employees co-located at the Columbia Blvd Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The Support Services (Administrative Services) intern, with guidance and under supervision, will:
  • Plan & coordinate small projects/work assignments.
  • Provide planning and coordination support for implementation of INFOR (Asset Management System).
  • Assist in managing & organization of records and files.
  • Assist Administrative Team on various projects and tasks as assigned.

Treatment and Pumping O&M - Support Services (Maintenance Reliability & Asset Management) - 1 Position
This team oversees Maintenance planning and asset management for the 2 wastewater treatment plans and approximately 100 pump stations through the collection systems. Work includes data entry and management in their workorder management system as well as field data gathering and reporting.
The Support Services (Maintenance Reliability & Asset Management) intern, with guidance and under supervision, will:
  • Conduct field data gathering and field asset labeling
  • Record data into the WAM Systems as well as data management and clean up
  • Conduct small replacement and rehabilitation project work
  • Develop statistical reliability models based on existing asset failure data
