Responsibilities

Summary

The Counselor-Intern may be involved in all aspects of the client’s recovery and treatment and must be able to deal with clients in a caring and compassionate manner, but reacting firmly when circumstances warrant. The Counselor Intern reports directly to the Director of Mental Health Counseling Services.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Counselor Intern maintains a case load of 1 - 5 clients.
  • Counsels clients through weekly 60-minute meetings.
  • Counsels client financial on issues including savings, fines, child support, or alimony.
  • Maintains up-to-date client files.
  • Case conferences with Mental Health Counseling Director.
  • Oversees assigned group counseling sessions.
  • Handles crisis interventions as needed.
  • Handles family other counseling.
  • Oversees and participates in recreational activities.
  • Communicates (letter, telephone, meeting) with probation or parole departments.
  • Appears in court with clients.
  • Referrals to DVR, PIC, HIV clinics, Medical and social Service agencies when required for client.
  • Plans discharge activities with MHCS Director and clients.
  • Prepares monthly statistical reports.
  • Attends on an on-going basis, courses towards LAC/LPC, CADC or LCADC status, or other health professional license that includes work of an alcohol, drug or mental health nature within its scope of practice.
  • Participates in all client related meetings.
  • Conducts drug and alcohol screenings.
  • Prepares materials for all groups.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Prepares discharge summaries of caseload.
  • Participates in daily education with MHCS Director.
  • Prepares client charts and updates.
  • Completes knowledge of written assignments and proper presentation to clients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and must be pursuing CADC / LCADC, LAC / LPC, LCSW licensing.
  • Required to complete one-hundred (100) hours during the course of at study GEO MHCS. Of this, forty/fifty (40/50) hours of must be in direct individual and group counseling services and fifty/sixty indirect hours performing other activities related to the student’s work at GEO MHCS (e.g., scheduling, notes, meetings, preparation for clients).
  • Interns may have the opportunity to audio and/or video record one or more clients.
  • Individual clinical supervision (face to face) for MA students will be conducted by a licensed psychiatrist, LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or licensed psychologist. Note: Post MA students in school counseling supervision can be provided by a certified school counselor.
  • If the counselor is recovering, a minimum of 3 years in recovery is essential. CADC/LCADC candidate should be thoroughly familiar with 12-Step Programs.
  • Candidates should have some knowledge or experience in Individual and Group counseling process. Candidates should have knowledge of local and county social service agencies. Candidate must have good to excellent written and oral communications skills. The counselor-intern must serve as an appropriate role model and function as part of a team.
