Job description

The Student Training Experience Program is partnering with Riverland Community College students to provide a research experience for up to two consecutive semesters at The Hormel Institute. This opportunity is designed for students in the early years of their academic training who are interested in mathematics, statistics, calculus, data analysis, or related quantitative fields.
Through this program, students will apply concepts learned in coursework to real research problems, while gaining practical experience in an active research environment. Students will have opportunities to strengthen their quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills, participate in professional development activities, and increase their understanding of research careers in mathematics, statistics, computational science, and interdisciplinary scientific fields.
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the program during both the Fall and Spring semesters of the academic year. The employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.
Responsibilities
• Assist with research activities related to mathematics, statistics, data analysis, modeling, or other quantitative projects.
• Support faculty and research staff with data organization, data entry, basic coding, computations, and interpretation of results.
• Help prepare tables, graphs, summaries, and reports for research activities.
• Apply mathematical or statistical concepts learned in class to practical research questions.
• Maintain accurate and organized records of assigned work.
• Work closely with research team members to support ongoing projects.
• Participate in program check-ins and evaluations at the beginning, middle, and end of the program.
• Participate in professional development opportunities designed for student trainees.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Flexible Work Profile
The Research and Innovation Office (RIO) and The Hormel Institute endorses a "work with flexibility" approach that offers a welcoming and flexible work environment where everyone is inspired to do their best. Some on-site work may be necessary for certain positions, even those designated as fully remote. Because we are a land-grant institution that serves the state, the University will continue to- in most cases- expect employees to live in Minnesota.
This position has been designated as eligible for Flexible Work Profile One.
Flexible Work Profile One, Office/Lab-Based - is expected to work primarily on-site in the office/lab. Only occasionally and inconsistently working remotely. Your office will be located at The Hormel Institute in Austin, Minnesota. • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions in English.
• Must be a current Riverland Community College student enrolled in coursework in mathematics, statistics, calculus, data science, computer science, or a related quantitative field.
• Interest in research, problem-solving, and quantitative analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
• Completion of college-level coursework in calculus, statistics, algebra I, or related subjects.
• Basic experience with Excel, programming, or data analysis tools.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to complete work accurately.
