Essential Job Duties
This position provides care and coordination for patients with the Radiation Oncology department of the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center. The Radiation Oncology service offers leading edge care for patients in need of diagnosis and treatment related to various types of cancer.
A person in this department must possess in-depth knowledge of veterinary medicine and a strong desire to work in a fast-changing, teaching environment with a varied population of people.

Direct patient care duties include but are not limited to:
  • Act as primary point of contact for scheduling and delivering radiation therapy to patients
  • Participate in client check in, patient admitting, updates, scheduling, and questions
  • In depth knowledge of service specific patients through student and clinician communications regarding presenting problems, diagnostics, treatment options and overall projected plan of care
  • Perform and support various diagnostic testing and procedures including; anesthesia support and monitoring, CT imaging, LINAC radiation setup & delivery
  • Prepare patients for radiation treatments through communication, planning review, and adherence to prescribed clinical plans
  • Provide direct patient care and medical treatments including TPR, BP monitoring, venipuncture, IV catheter placement, sedative/treatment therapy injections
  • Perform moderate risk drug calculations, including CRI, IV fluid, medical pain management and chemotherapy treatment therapies
  • Provide post-anesthesia and post-sedation recovery and care, including pain management, for an array of elective procedures
  • Direct monitoring of radiation oncology patients, associated with, but not limited to the following diseases; Lymphoma, Mammary Tumors, Oral Melanoma, Hemangiosarcoma, Mast Cell Tumor, Osteosarcoma
  • Proficient use of specialized patient care equipment such as LINAC system, anesthesia machine, IV fluid pumps, pulse Oximeter, BP monitor, syringe pump
  • Perform all quality control checks for specialized radiation equipment
  • Work in tandem with diagnostic groups associated with CT, Anesthesia, Radiology
The position provides essential patient, departmental and hospital coordination of workflow, information and teaching with duties to include, but are not limited to:
  • Work directly with hospital personnel to facilitate communication and anticipate, integrate, and coordinate services that optimize both internal and external satisfaction and overall patient care.
  • Recordand communicate a variety of data relating to patient care, client/rDVM communication and diagnostic testing/treatments with use of hospital information systems.
  • Orientation, teaching, and coaching new staff, students, interns and residents in related policies, procedures, and patient care
  • Maintain a clean and working environment following hospital standards, infectious disease and hospital policies, along with OSHA, EHS and Radiation Safety policies and trainings
  • Participate in financial responsibilities such as procedural/consult charges, billing communications, estimate updates
  • Participate in coordination of patient visit including but not limited to; requesting radiographic/surgical/anesthetic procedures, medication requests and diagnostic sample submission
  • Keep all necessary equipment in clean and working order and have all necessary and appropriate stocked supplies available for procedures and daily patient care

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in medical diagnostics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licenses.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.
Required License or Certification
  • Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
  • Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program RT "Radiation Therapist"
