Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineer information

What does an internship bioinformatics software engineer do?

An Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineer assists in developing and maintaining software tools used to analyze biological data, such as DNA sequences or protein structures. They often work under the supervision of senior engineers and scientists to write code, troubleshoot issues, and implement algorithms for biological research. Interns may also help process large datasets, visualize results, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. This role provides hands-on experience in both software development and the application of computational methods to biological problems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship bioinformatics software engineer?

To thrive as an Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of programming (often in Python, R, or Java), basic knowledge of molecular biology or genomics, and current pursuit of a degree in bioinformatics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools (such as BLAST, Bioconductor, or Galaxy), version control systems like Git, and experience analyzing biological datasets are typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and learn in multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities ensure interns can contribute to meaningful research, adapt quickly to new technologies, and facilitate teamwork in complex scientific environments.

What types of projects do internship bioinformatics software engineers typically work on?

Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineers often work on projects involving the development and optimization of software tools for analyzing large biological datasets, such as genomic sequences or protein structures. These projects frequently require collaboration with biologists and data scientists, offering valuable exposure to interdisciplinary teamwork. Interns may be tasked with writing code, testing algorithms, or visualizing data, all of which build practical skills in both software engineering and bioinformatics. This hands-on experience not only enhances technical proficiency but also helps interns better understand real-world applications in life sciences, setting a strong foundation for future career growth.

What is the difference between Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineer vs Bioinformatics Data Analyst?

AspectInternship Bioinformatics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biotech companies, or academic institutions
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in biotech, pharmaceutical, and research organizations for software development
Common Search & ComparisonCompared for entry-level software development roles in bioinformatics

While both roles involve working with biological data, an Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineer focuses on developing software tools and algorithms, often requiring programming skills and software development knowledge. A Bioinformatics Data Analyst primarily analyzes biological data, using statistical and data visualization tools. The internship provides hands-on experience in coding and software creation, whereas a data analyst role emphasizes data interpretation and reporting.

Key responsibilities

  • Own high-impact technical initiatives across the product, including customer-facing dashboards, sample-tracking notifications, visualization pipelines, ML-powered cancer-cell detection, and laboratory workflow automation.

  • Ship software from ambiguity to production, delivering solutions that are used in real-world clinical and laboratory settings.

  • Take responsibility for taking important problems from initial concept to production, ensuring timely delivery of functional software.

Job description

About the Company

We are building the Artificial Immunologist: a foundational laboratory that digitizes the immune system and turns high-resolution immune data into actionable signals for human health. The immune system sits at the center of oncology, autoimmune disease, clinical trials, prenatal medicine, surgery, and aging, yet its clinical utility remains largely untapped. We are building the infrastructure to change that.

By combining laboratory automation, immune profiling, data infrastructure, and machine learning, our technology helps drug developers and physicians answer consequential questions: Will a $200M+ clinical trial succeed? Will a therapy cause irreversible harm? Which patients will respond to a critical drug? This is an opportunity to build software at the intersection of AI, biology, and high-stakes healthcare.

Company Snapshot

  • $11.6M raised, with the latest financing completed in October 2021 at a $40M pre-money valuation.
  • 13-person team with only one existing engineerโ€”this hire will become the second engineer.
  • 30+ clinical trials powered today for major drug developers including Genentech, Recursion, iOnctura, and Obsidian.
  • Revenue grew 300% year over year, with the business operating around cash-flow positive over the prior 18 months.
  • Full-stack clinical infrastructure spanning laboratory workflows, blood preservation, data analysis, and customer-facing products.
  • Interdisciplinary team combining expertise in immunology, advanced diagnostics, machine learning, and engineering.

Why Candidates Should Join

  • Become the second engineer. Influence architecture, product direction, engineering standards, and what gets built from the earliest stages.
  • Work directly with the Co-founder and CEO. You'll operate close to the company's most important technical, product, and customer problems.
  • Ship software with real-world consequences. Your work will directly support clinical trials, laboratory operations, and products used by major drug developers.
  • Own problems across the stack. Build customer-facing applications, automate laboratory workflows, improve data pipelines, and apply ML to cancer-cell boundary detection.
  • Build in a domain you can learn on the job. Biology or bioinformatics experience is not required; the team can teach the domain if you bring exceptional engineering ability.
  • Meaningful early-stage equity. Individual contributions have disproportionate influence on the company's trajectory.

About the Role

You'll join as the second software engineer, reporting directly to the co-founder and CEO. You'll own high-impact technical initiatives across the product, from customer-facing trial dashboards and sample-tracking notifications to visualisation pipelines, ML-powered cancer-cell detection, and laboratory workflow automation.

The expectation is straightforward: take important problems from ambiguity to production and ship software customers actually use. Within your first 90 days, you should have shipped either a customer-facing initiative or laboratory workflow automation into production.

Qualifications

  • 0โ€“5 years of software engineering experience; exceptional new graduates with strong evidence of shipping are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong Python engineering skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work across the stack; React and TypeScript experience are useful but not required.
  • Familiarity with at least one major cloud platform such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Evidence of building and shipping quality software in a strong engineering environment.
  • Strong product judgment and an interest in working directly with customers.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical users.
  • Strong analytical thinking, adaptability, and judgment around automation and reusable systems.
  • No specific degree or biology/bioinformatics background required. Engineering ability matters more than credentials or domain specialization.

Compensation & Logistics

  • $90Kโ€“$160K base + competitive equity
  • Location: Salt Lake City, UT or San Mateo, CA
  • Work Model: On-site, 5 days/week
  • Visa: Available
