Job description

The primary function of the Head Men's Basketball Coach is to facilitate all operations of a successful basketball program, including recruiting, retaining and coaching members of the men's basketball team. The Associate Athletic Director and Head Men's Basketball Coach is responsible for day-to-day coaching responsibilities and is expected to meet annual recruiting and retention goals. This position will also oversee the coordination of travel, competition management, equipment management, camps, and fundraising.

Essential Functions:

The following list of duties is meant to be representative of the work performed in this position. The omission of a specific duty or responsibility will not preclude it from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical extension of position responsibilities.

  • Recruit, retain and graduate successful student-athletes
  • In direct planning with the Director of Athletics and the office of admissions, develop and execute recruiting strategies to meet the recruitment and retention goals set by the College
  • Ensure academic performance and personal development of student-athletes by engaging with the Core Retention Group and the Student Life team
  • Coordinate all aspects of a successful basketball program including scheduling and facilitating competition, daily practice plans, player management, equipment management, camps, and fundraising
  • Demonstrate high level of intercultural competence and the ability to work with diverse population
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism on and off the field toward student athletes, other coaches, parents, administrators, and members of the community
  • Supervise Assistant Men's Basketball Coach
  • Coordinate and host annual summer camps
  • Serve as the liaison for campus wide diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
  • Oversee all diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives for the athletic department
  • Serve as member on various committees as assigned
  • Supervise various student-athlete focused programs, as assigned
  • Work with the athletic department senior staff to coordinate game management and facility operations to include:
    • Athletic Facilities
    • Work in collaboration with athletic department senior staff to:
    • Manage operations for all athletics facilities
    • Create and maintain a capital facility improvement plan and advise on implementation to the senior leadership team
    • Train, schedule, and manage Bruner facility and event interns
    • Evaluate operational procedures for all athletic facilities
    • Coordinate with campus Public Safety and Campus Services to secure buildings and spaces
    • Assist Campus Services in the procurement of services related to athletic facility operation (e.g.,. turf and track maintenance, vehicle maintenance and repair)
    • Submit work orders for all athletics facility maintenance needs
    • Work with Director of Campus Events on facilitating the use of Bruner for institutional and community events, camps and rentals
  • Game Management
    • Assist in directing all aspects of game management for home contests and events, including:
    • Represent the Office of Intercollegiate Athletics as a member of the Campus Services committee
    • Develop and implement game management policies and procedures
    • Schedule and train game managers for all home athletic events
    • Serve as a game administrator as a part of the administrative team
    • Coordinate staff for athletics outside rentals, practices and contests
    • Hire, manage, and contract student staff (setup and event management) for internal athletic events and outside rentals
    • Complete all deposits and reconciliations after athletic contests and outside rental events
    • Serve as department scheduler for all athletic facilities and classrooms through EMS software

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree, required
  • Intercultural competency; ability to work with individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Able to develop and maintain collaborative relationships, engage in creative problem-solving, and extend enlightened hospitality when working with others.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Possess an outcomes-oriented approach to coaching
  • Valid drivers license and evidence of insurability, required
  • Minimum of two years coaching experience, preferred
  • Recruiting experience, preferred
  • Must understand and value the liberal arts experience for students at Illinois College, especially including participation in other sports, clubs and organizations, and having an academic experience
  • First Aid and AED certification, preferred
  • Ability to work weekdays, weekends, and some evenings
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds
