Position Overview:
LiquidPiston is seeking a highly motivated Simulation Engineering Intern to join our engineering team. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of next-generation propulsion systems through advanced modeling, simulation, and analysis. Working alongside experienced engineers, you will help evaluate engine performance, thermal behavior, structural integrity, fluid dynamics, and system-level interactions to support product development and testing efforts.
The ideal candidate is passionate about solving complex engineering problems, enjoys working with computational tools, and is eager to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges. You thrive in a fast-paced R&D environment, are detail-oriented, and enjoy collaborating across multiple engineering disciplines.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in developing and executing simulation models to support engine, thermal, structural, fluid, and system-level analyses
  • Support the validation of simulation results through comparison with experimental and test data
  • Collaborate with mechanical, combustion, controls, and test engineers to evaluate design concepts and optimize performance
  • Analyze and interpret simulation results, identifying trends and providing engineering recommendations
  • Assist with automation of simulation workflows, data processing, and reporting
  • Document methodologies, assumptions, results, and conclusions in technical reports and presentations
  • Support design reviews and engineering decision-making through analytical insights
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Experience with simulation and analysis tools such as ANSYS, MATLAB/Simulink, GT-Power, COMSOL, Abaqus, STAR-CCM+, Fluent, or similar software
  • Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), thermal analysis, or system modeling
  • Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar languages
  • Understanding of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and structural mechanics
  • Experience processing and analyzing large datasets
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and technical communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team
  • Previous internship, research, Formula SAE, Baja SAE, rocketry, UAV, or other hands-on engineering project experience is a plus
