As an AS400 intern, you’ll typically receive hands-on training with guidance from experienced IT professionals who specialize in IBM iSeries systems. Most organizations pair interns with mentors who help them navigate legacy system concepts, coding in RPG or COBOL, and understanding workflows unique to AS400 operations. The collaborative environment encourages questions and skill development, preparing you for more advanced responsibilities as the internship progresses.

What is an AS400 internship?

An AS400 internship is a temporary position designed to give students or recent graduates hands-on experience working with IBM's AS400 (also known as IBM iSeries) systems. Interns typically learn to manage, support, and develop applications for these midrange computer systems, which are widely used in industries like banking, logistics, and manufacturing. The internship may involve tasks such as troubleshooting, system administration, coding in RPG or COBOL, and understanding business processes that rely on the AS400 platform.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AS400 Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AS400 Intern, you need a foundational understanding of computer science principles, basic programming knowledge (preferably in RPG, COBOL, or CL), and an eagerness to learn legacy systems. Familiarity with IBM i (AS400) environments, database management, and tools like IBM Navigator for i or Rational Developer for i is advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborative IT environments. These skills are vital for maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting critical business applications running on AS400 systems while learning from experienced professionals.
