Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
ENVIRONMENTAL & MATERIALS COMPLIANCE ENGINEER (STARLINK)
SpaceX is leveraging its experience building rockets and spacecraft to deploy Starlink, the world's most advanced broadband internet system. Starlink is the world's largest satellite constellation that provides fast, reliable internet to millions of users worldwide. We design, build, manufacture, and operate all parts of the system including thousands of satellites and millions of customer kits. Our customers currently include teachers in the most remote parts of the Amazon, researchers in Antarctica, digital nomads who travel via RV, emergency responders, commercial airlines, cruise lines, and residential users who live in more rural or developing areas. While users can get online within minutes almost anywhere in the world, we've only begun to scratch the surface of Starlink's potential. We are looking for best-in-class engineers to help maximize Starlink's utility for individuals, communities, and businesses.
Product Compliance Engineers will play a critical role as SpaceX strives to deliver internet to those that need it most. They will drive regulatory efforts, impact internal design decisions, and obtain the product certifications needed to sell and ship millions of consumer-facing devices. These devices - including Starlink dishes, Wi-Fi routers, power supply, accessories, etc. - are designed and manufactured completely in-house by SpaceX. We are looking for a specialized Environmental & Materials Compliance Engineer to support Starlink's high-volume consumer and enterprise hardware. You will serve as the primary technical owner for RoHS, REACH, WEEE, FMD, Prop 65, and all other material and environmental compliance requirements that enable global shipment of millions of units. Engineers on the team will be hands-on, regularly interact with multiple technical disciplines, and ultimately ensure that Starlink is a global success.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Own full material compliance strategy and execution for all Starlink hardware, including Full Material Declarations, BOM analysis, and supply chain data management
  • Lead RoHS, REACH, WEEE, Prop 65, and global compliance programs
  • Manage material data systems and drive supplier data collection and validation
  • Conduct risk assessments on new components and materials and provide clear compliance direction to design, sourcing, and teams
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation and regulatory files for global environmental compliance
  • Stay ahead of emerging regulations and translate them into actionable requirements for Starlink

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, material engineering, materials science, environmental science, chemistry, or other STEM discipline
  • 1+ years of experience in materials & environmental compliance for high-volume consumer electronics, industrial equipment, or information technology equipment (internship experience is applicable)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • 3+ years of direct experience in materials & environmental compliance for high-volume electronics (consumer electronics, IT, or automotive strongly preferred)
  • Deep expertise in RoHS, REACH, WEEE, and Full Material Declaration processes
  • Hands-on experience with material data management systems and supplier data collection at scale
  • Strong understanding of global environmental regulations (EU, US, UK, China, etc.)
  • Experience performing compliance risk assessments on complex BOMs
  • Excellent technical writing and documentation skills
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams (Design, NPI, Sourcing, Manufacturing) without direct authority

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to work extended hours or weekends as needed for mission critical deadlines

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:
  • To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
