What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as an Altium Designer intern?

As an Altium Designer intern, you can expect to assist with schematic capture, PCB layout, and library management tasks, often under the guidance of more experienced engineers. You'll likely work on real circuit board designs, help update component libraries, and participate in design reviews. Interns may also collaborate closely with hardware teams to ensure designs meet functional and manufacturability requirements. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to the full hardware development lifecycle and helps you build practical skills in electronic design automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Altium Designer, and why are they important?

To excel as an Internship Altium Designer, you need foundational knowledge in electronics, PCB design principles, and a background in electrical engineering or related studies. Familiarity with Altium Designer software and basic understanding of PCB manufacturing processes are typically expected. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you collaborate with engineering teams and handle design challenges. These capabilities ensure accurate, efficient PCB layouts and successful integration into larger engineering projects.

What is an Internship in Altium Designer?

An Internship in Altium Designer is a temporary, hands-on training position where students or entry-level professionals work with the Altium Designer software, a leading electronic design automation (EDA) tool used for designing printed circuit boards (PCBs). Interns learn to create and edit PCB layouts, schematic diagrams, and component libraries under the guidance of experienced engineers. This role helps interns gain practical skills in electronics design, teamwork, and industry-standard practices, which can be valuable for future careers in electrical engineering or related fields.

What is the difference between Internship Altium Designer vs PCB Design Intern?

AspectInternship Altium DesignerPCB Design Intern
Required SkillsProficiency in Altium Designer, basic electronics knowledgeKnowledge of PCB design, familiarity with design software
Work EnvironmentElectronics manufacturing or design firms, labsElectronics companies, R&D departments

Job description

About Humble Robotics
Working at Humble Robotics means taking on the biggest change in ground transportation in decades. Weโ€™re building an autonomous, zero-emissions hauler that dramatically lowers the cost of freight with groundbreaking vision-based AI, designed for todayโ€™s global logistics network.ย
ย
Weโ€™re a fast-moving, close-knit team of AV industry veterans and innovative thinkers. We donโ€™t believe culture can be engineered โ€“ but when it falls into place, itโ€™s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
ย
Progress has never felt so present.
Position Overview
Own the design of new electronic hardware for autonomous automotive platforms end-to-endโ€”from concept and architecture through schematic, layout, fabrication, and release to manufacturing.ย
Key Responsibilities
  • Bring up new and existing PCBs: power-on, basic validation, programming, and root-causing board-level issues.
  • Integrate sensors, compute, and actuators on the bench and final platform; exercise UART, SPI, IยฒC, USB, CAN, etc.
  • Scout, buy, and stand up EVKs/dev kits; build simple test setups and report data to inform hardware choices.
  • Use Altium for schematic capture, small design changes, simple board spins (breakouts/adapters), and layout review.
  • Plan and run lab tests with oscilloscope, logic analyzer, supplies, and loads; document bring-up steps, test results, and known issues.
  • Work closely with Mechanical, Firmware and Systems engineers to debug system-level issues that trace back to electronics.
Minimum Qualifications
  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field; 0โ€“5 years relevant experience (including projects/internships).
  • Hands-on experience bringing up custom PCBs or complex dev boards.
  • Proficiency with Altium Designer (schematic, basic layout or review, and outputs: BOM, Gerbers, assembly files).
  • Working knowledge of common peripherals and components: microcontrollers/SoCs, power regulators, basic analog, level shifting.
  • Practical experience with UART, SPI, IยฒC, and at least one of USB or CAN.
  • Comfortable with lab equipment (scope, logic analyzer, DMM, supplies) and reading datasheets/app notes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience integrating sensors and compute for robotics or autonomy (e.g., cameras, radar, lidar, IMUs, GNSS).
  • Basic embedded firmware skills (C/C++) for board bring-up and hardware testing
Compensation
