What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Altium Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Altium Designer, you need a strong understanding of electronic circuit design, PCB layout, and schematic capture, ideally supported by a degree in electrical engineering or related field. Proficiency with Altium Designer software and familiarity with industry standards such as IPC, along with relevant certifications, are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help ensure accurate designs and smooth collaboration with team members. These skills are essential for delivering high-quality, manufacturable PCB designs efficiently, even within limited working hours.

What does a Part Time Altium Designer do?

A Part Time Altium Designer is responsible for creating and modifying electronic circuit board designs using Altium Designer software, but on a part-time or contract basis. Their tasks typically include schematic capture, PCB layout, generating manufacturing files, and collaborating with engineering teams to ensure the designs meet project requirements. These professionals often work on multiple projects or support ongoing development efforts, providing flexible design solutions to companies that do not require a full-time PCB designer.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time Altium Designers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Part-time Altium Designers often face the challenge of staying coordinated with full-time engineering teams, as project updates and design iterations can occur rapidly. Clear communication and diligent documentation are key to ensuring alignment on project requirements and changes. Additionally, managing time effectively to meet tight deadlines while working limited hours requires strong organization and prioritization skills. Using collaboration tools and maintaining regular check-ins with team members can greatly enhance workflow efficiency and project success.

PCB Hardware Design Engineer, Senior
The Opportunity:
Are you looking for an opportunity to combine your technical skills with big picture thinking to make an impact on national security? You understand how a board-level design decision ripples through an entire system, and you know how to turn a set of requirements into hardware that performs in the field. Your ability to lead a design effort and bring a circuit card from concept through fabrication, bring-up, and qualification makes you an integral part of delivering a customer-focused engineering solution.
As an Electrical Engineer on our team, you will own the circuit board design and layout effort for an advanced defense capability program, working alongside Booz Allen colleagues, other support contractors, and U.S. Navy personnel. You will translate system and subsystem requirements into board-level specifications, lead schematic capture and multilayer PCB layout, and guide designs through signal and power integrity analysis, design reviews, fabrication, assembly, and test. You will set the technical standard for the hardware team, mentor junior engineers, and serve as the design authority the program relies on to deliver reliable electronics on schedule. Grow your skills by merging proven engineering discipline with new technologies to build systems that support the mission.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 8+ years of experience in electrical design and development, including leading printed circuit board (PCB) design and layout efforts
  • Experience with schematic capture and multilayer PCB layout using tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, OrCAD, or Siemens/Mentor Xpedition
  • Experience designing analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits, including component selection and worst-case circuit analysis
  • Experience with high-speed digital design, including signal integrity, power integrity, controlled impedance, and layer stackup definition
  • Experience developing fabrication and assembly packages, including BOMs, Gerber, ODB++ outputs, and assembly drawings in accordance with IPC standards
  • Experience with board bring-up, debug, and validation using lab instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers
  • Experience leading design reviews, defining design standards, and mentoring junior engineers
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturability, testability, and reliability
  • Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience designing high-reliability or ruggedized electronics for harsh or deployed environments
  • Experience with DoD hardware programs and the associated technical review process, including PDR and CDR
  • Experience integrating FPGAs, microcontrollers, or embedded systems at the board level
  • Experience with EMI/EMC design and qualification, including MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464
  • Experience with environmental design and qualification, including MIL-STD-810
  • Experience with thermal analysis and power delivery design for dense or high-power boards
  • Experience using a Model-Based Systems Engineering or Digital Engineering approach
  • Ability to communicate advanced electrical engineering concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders and translate system-level requirements into board-level specifications and verify designs against them
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • IPC Certified Interconnect Designer (CID) or CID+ certification

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; Secret clearance is required.
