Internship Aircraft Composite information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Aircraft Composite, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Aircraft Composite, you need a solid understanding of materials science, engineering principles, and composite fabrication techniques, often supported by coursework in aerospace or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, composite layup procedures, and testing equipment is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills help interns excel in hands-on, collaborative projects. These competencies ensure accurate and efficient development of composite components critical to aircraft performance and safety.

What types of projects and hands-on tasks can I expect during an Internship in Aircraft Composites?

As an intern in Aircraft Composites, you can expect to be involved in a mix of hands-on laboratory work, assisting with the fabrication and testing of composite materials, and supporting engineering teams with research or analysis. Typical tasks may include preparing composite layups, conducting materials testing, documenting results, and participating in team meetings to discuss project progress. You might also collaborate with engineers and technicians on real-world aerospace projects, gaining exposure to industry-standard tools and manufacturing processes. This internship offers valuable experience in both technical skills and teamwork within a high-tech environment.

What is an Internship in Aircraft Composite?

An Internship in Aircraft Composite is a temporary training position where students or recent graduates work with composite materials used in aircraft manufacturing and maintenance. Interns gain practical experience in areas such as composite fabrication, repair, quality control, and testing. The role often involves hands-on work with advanced materials like carbon fiber and fiberglass, supporting engineers and technicians on real projects. These internships help build essential skills and industry knowledge for a career in aerospace engineering or related fields.

What is the difference between Internship Aircraft Composite vs Aircraft Structural Technician?

AspectInternship Aircraft CompositeAircraft Structural Technician
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or completed relevant education in composites or aerospaceHigh school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentLearning-focused, entry-level, often in training or mentorship settingsHands-on, maintenance and repair environment on aircraft structures
Employer & Industry UsageInternships offered by aerospace companies, airlines, or defense contractorsAirlines, maintenance facilities, aerospace manufacturing

Internship Aircraft Composite roles are designed for students or entry-level individuals gaining experience in composite materials, while Aircraft Structural Technicians perform skilled repairs and maintenance on aircraft structures. The internship provides foundational knowledge, whereas the technician role involves hands-on technical work.

Job description

Company Overview
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.
Overview
Joby Aviation is seeking a Composites Engineer (Methods and Allowables) to join our growing Materials and Process team. This role is a key position within the team as the company quickly moves towards FAA certification. The engineer will be expected to create validated standards and procedures for substantiation of various types of aircraft structural components. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work across multiple engineering disciplines and play an instrumental role in creating Joby's design and analysis standards.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and validate structural analysis methods and standards
  • Create tools for efficient, accurate analysis of composite and metallic structures
  • Create and execute test plans to validate analysis tools and generate statistical design values for use in structural sizing
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other team members to ensure that assigned projects meet technical, budget, and schedule requirements
  • Communicate project plans, status, and results to internal stakeholders
  • Author white papers describing novel substantiation approaches

Required
  • B.S. in mechanical, aerospace, or structural engineering
  • 1-2 years of demonstrated working experience, including internships, co-ops, academic research, or project experience
  • Experience performing analysis (stress, stability) of composite structures for aerospace or other high-performance applications using finite element analysis and hand calculations
  • Solid understanding of composite materials characterization testing, including test matrix definition, data evaluation, and basis property calculation
  • Excellent understanding of the mechanics of composite materials (Classical Lamination Theory, elastic and strength properties, failure modes)
  • Proficiency with programming or scripting languages (C++, Python, VBA, etc.)
  • Ability to create well-written and accurate technical documents such as analysis templates, test plans, test reports, and certification documents

Desired
  • M.S. in in mechanical, aerospace, or structural engineering
  • 3+ years of experience related to in the development and certification of composite structures for small aircraft
  • In-depth knowledge of the certification process for composite aircraft structures (AC 20-107B)
  • Experience in the design and analysis of bonded and bolted joints
  • Experience performing structural testing and test-analysis correlation of composite or metallic structures
  • Working knowledge of composites design and manufacturing

Additional Information
